Thinking of trying to have cheap 4 day long weekend next year. Anyone stayed in Visp and done Zermatt and / or Sass Fee on a daily basis ? I reckon that trying to get a cheap hotel just for the weekend will be nigh on impossible in March. Let me know if I'm completely bonkers.

Hmmm ... have stayed in Saas Fee and got the post bus to and from there at the beggining and end of the week. Can't remember how long exactly it took, think about an hour so could be a fair bit of hassle, don't know about time / distance to Zermatt. Saas Fee travel info is here:

dsoutar, I would think..IIRC..that it would take over an hour getting upto Zermatt from Visp... then you have to get up the hill.. The nearest lift would be Gorngrat which is almost right opposite the banhof..but that is a slow cog railway. Sunnega and KM lifts would be a minimum of 15 mins walk for the former and 20 opr so for the latter from the station. So I would guess that you are talking 2 hrs plus from Visp to the top of a lift system in Zermatt...
Not sure that is worth a saving.
Tasch is only a few minutes by train, that might be a better plan..but then that rules out Saas Fee as you would have to go down the hill first.
Maybe Stalden would be an option as it seems to form a natural fork in between the two vallies. Not done that, mind.

IMO it won't. Outside Xmas/New Yr/Easter/school hols it should be ok. Zermatt has lots of B&Bs & small hotels which are flexible on bookings. On my last non-peak time Zermatt visit (a December a couple of seasons ago) I had quite a lot of choice - via the tourist office online booking system as I recall.
Places might not take a weekend booking now (as they will be hanging on for week long bookings) but will be much more obliging a week or two before. You would also undoubtedly be able to turn up in the resort & find somewhere on arrival in March.
We ended up at the Gletscherblick B&B - excellent and highly recommended.
Also done the same in Saas Fee- x2 low season stays and got digs easily via the tourist office website.

I stayed in Saas Grund over the Easter weekend (3 yrs ago) for about £20 per night b&b in a singe room. I'd guess that you'd find somewhere there with a lot less travelling each day than from Visp. If you want to ski Zermatt then look at Tasch or the next stop (I think it's called somethink like Randa??).

dsoutar, the return fare from Visp to Zermatt is 66 CHF and the journey takes an hour.
I'd have a look in Zermatt first if I were you, fire off an email to the tourist office, info@zermatt.ch , with your requirements. They're very helpful.
