Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

making slopes?!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This might seem a silly question but I have been dying to ask it:

I appreciate that some, if not all, ski resorts have been built around existing villages. However, with regard to the actual slopes - do they sort of bomb parts of the mountain(s) to even out and "make" red runs, green runs, blue runs, etc or are slopes natural slopes?!

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

jb1970, They use as much "natural" as they can, but will alter terrain to make links or open up new areas.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Having seen the USAF and RAF bomb lots of mountains in Afghanistan I can tell you bombing is maybe not the best way of moving terrain around, just tends to leave shallow holes not conducive to skiing Laughing

jb1970, I remember seeing a television programme that showed some of the work that goes into making ski runs. I can't remember whether it was the us or canada, but they were pulling down trees, and bulldozing the mountain to make it how they wanted.

From what I have seen in resorts, alot of runs are shaped, but more to help the snow stay and not blow away, and also to stop landslides etc. In certain cases, they will blow up the rock as this would be the quickest and easiest way to do what is needed Very Happy

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Modern (new build) resorts are laid out using CAD and then runs cut appropriately. Lots of reforming goes on in the summer especially around new lift installation. Also dirt half pipes and tabletops may be built to require less snow to build the park. The best slopes are of course natural however

jb1970, Take a look at easyskis's summertime LDA thread, there are photos of work of reshaping in progress.
