Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

shockingmoment, credit crunch, what, moi? wink Laughing

Megeve would be a good choice for a romantic break, sounds like you've got cash to splash!

Or how about Les Contamines ? A bit smaller, but generally better snow.

Credit Crunch? Nah -
Jan - cheap'n' cheerful with the lads, 2 to a room, packed lunches, more for beer. Split the car hire costs, apt costs, food costs. Works out quite well.
Feb - diy, self catering with the family - can't afford restaurants with my kids. Packed lunches on the mountain. Couple of restaurant meals.
Mar - this is the treat. Its her birthday so I spoil her. I get some benefits too. Toofy Grin And I get to go skiing as well....

She's so lucky.

Even the March one is relatively inexpensive. Flights booked in advance, small car from the airport - 4 days, 3 day ski pass..... hmm well, perhaps not so cheap after all!

Only live once!

Skied Les Contamines before - really nice - thanks for the suggestion.
Would like to try somewhere else. Found some nice hotels in Megeve - £100 / night, incl breakfast. Centre ville.

shockingmoment, the missus is bound to like Megève (careful with your CC though wink) and there's loads of skiing at your level.

If you're interested in lessons, Simon Butler Skiing offers half-board packages with instruction included for what you might spend on accommodation alone.

If you end up booking anywhere in Megève, let us know for restaurant recommendations, etc.

Just the flights at the moment. Well - flight actually. EJ return not out yet....

I've just spotted your thread on Megeve. I'll have to remain very sober with this one I think.

What accom did you finally settle on?

OMG! Gorgeous hotel. Stunning rooms. Incredible ambience.

And so cheap....

That has to be one of, if not the, most expensive bottles of red wine you've ever had.

Until you get to Megeve, of course.

shockingmoment, I don't think you'll be able to walk to the slopes from many places in central Megeve. You might be able to walk to one of the lifts, but definitely not all. It's not a "ski in and out" sort of a place, mostly.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
The lifts aren't likely to be close as pam w says ..and I recall Rochebourne being quite a walk... but the place has a nice ambience and shouldn't be any more expensive than, say, Verbier or Zermatt for most stuff.....

Of course, you can spend loads, but you can do that most places. It has been a while since I was there tho'

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Yes, I don't think it would be any worse than other expensive places, but I wouldn't agree that it's no more expensive than anywhere else in the Alps; there are plenty of places within a few miles of Megeve which are less expensive. It's a very nice place to go for people for whom the skiing, and its convenience, are not the be-all and end-all of a holiday. I would be a little reluctant, personally, to commit myself to a week of eating out in Megeve but if you can find a catered chalet (like the Simon Butler one mentioned above), or a self catering apartment where you can have some cheap meals in during the week, you certainly shouldn't have to spend loads. To ski the whole area you either need your own car, or to use the buses. "Shopping" in Megeve can only be recommended to somebody who doesn't have to ask prices (it's one of those places where you see lovely clothes in a window and know that there is absolutely no point going in to ask the price!). Even buying a simple souvenir like a simple woven basket in Megeve will cost you more than buying the same basket up the road in Praz sur Arly. But you can go to the casino - or the swimming pool - there's plenty of entertainment and the pedestrian-free centre is very attractive. May well be little or no snow in it, though.

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately SB don't do weekends - would have been a good choice. Never mind.

Its only for a long weekend so hopefully we'll find something.

I've spotted a few nice looking hotels - Le Gai Soleil, 500m from centre of town and lifts? Bit of a trek in boots, carrying skis though.

Any experience of this one?

Thanks,

SM

shockingmoment, find out if there's a ski bus stop nearby - they're pretty frequent, if the number of times I'm stuck behind them in traffic is anything to go by. There's no way I'd walk 500m in ski boots, personally, but then I'm an idle old git.

shockingmoment,

I can recommend Stanford Ski - Been with them a couple of times and they are good. Website is www.stanfordskiing.co.uk/catered_chalets.htm and their Chalet Sylvana is "only" 150m from the nearest lift. You can ski back quite close (in the right ski-conditions). A quick check of their website seems to say they now do short breaks.

shockingmoment, you need to get a village map as anything around the post office would be quite a walk IIRC...
500mtrs is ok...if you have to do it, not a problem, but I wouldn't want that walk everyday. At least one of the lifts is uphill so find out about that bus Laughing

I had a look on the viamichelin map and the Gai Soleil looks like 500m from the town centre, but only half that to the Rochebrune teelepherique. Not too bad a location.
