What is it that allows these resorts to open so early? Altitude, thus low temps early in the sseason?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Loveland sits between roughly 10k and 13k feet. It's practically sat on the top third of a high mountain.
Cold temps enable snowmaking early in the season. They just blast the slopes 24-7 with the snowguns.
They could do it in the Alps if they had the will.
Deep, natural snow doesn't really come to the Rockies for a few weeks yet.

It was baking (even up in the mountains) in CO at the weekend. Even when it clouded over one day in Aspen it didn't get very cold at all. Things must have changed since I got back.

I read the title of this thread as "lovemaking beings at Snowland". Must get my eyes (or something....) tested.

Its is not economic. Europeans (majority) do not go skiing in October,November.
Places like Loveland have the Metropolis of Denver to cover there costs.

When Les Sept Laux, near Grenoble, opened early in mid-Nov last year, the place was swamped with skiers.
Geneva and Zurich have plenty of wealthy, ski-hungry citizens.

My Swiss colleagues told me that skiing was very much on the decline in Switzerland. The majority of people living in Zurich had never ever been up the mountains !!

stanton, I have heard similar stories, on my home hill they had a record income and visitor season last winter but I can believe people are getting lazier. In April I skied the week before closing there was not a single bare patch anywhere on the piste, excellent conditions, the weather was amazing yet the place was deserted 10 or 20 people skiing in the whole resort only on closing day did a few extras turn up to say goodbye to winter. I was very pleased
