I have just completed this course. This is not for the faint hearted or unfit. It was pretty hardcore. If like me you are uable to take a two week stint abroad due to family/work commitments this may be the course for you. It pushes you both mentally, and physically. Both my personal skiing and my teaching have improved immeasureably over the past 5 days, due to course content and an excellant trainer. I was lucky, I passed. This is a high level course, and BIG step up from the Level 1, and only 3 out of 6 passed the whole thing.
If you pass the Teaching then on the Trainers recommendation you can then do the 5 day Technical part of the Level 2 in the Alps, so converting your qualificaion from SIUK to Alpine 2, but only on recommendation.
If you are interested and have your Level 1, contact the BASI office, I don't know if any further courses will bve run until next year now.

wink, congrats, sounds like it was quite exacting. Who was the trainer?

Trainer was Mr Silver-Gillespie! It was very exacting. If you are not spot on and technically correct and tick all the boxes you won't pass. Simple as that. Which is just as it should be otherwise the qualification would mean nothing.

wink, couldn't've wished for better. PSG's always good value. You should see him ski in the deep and soft.

That's very complimentary, I agree with you by the way. I haven't seen him ski personally (on a mountain) so I can only imagine.
Good idea this UKSI/SIUK course, for those that cannot or don't have the desire to teach in a resort due to work or family committments. Plus it means the artificial slopes will have higher grade instructors than the Level 1, especially in the winter months when many of the higher grade teachers may be away teaching in resort. I think it's very sensible.

Hey Wink,
Well done on passing!!
It's weird but just checked BASI site - they've taken down the October date. So thank goodness we got it last week and just a big thank you for your perseverance. Just want to say - UKSI is hard work but it is fun. BASI - keep it on the course list. IMO a great addition to the teaching schedule.
Will PM you later but was looking for sth here and found you (honest I'm not stalking you - freaky)!!!

wink, yes congratulations on passing!
For those who don't know, I was booked onto this course, but had to pull out thanks to breaking my wrist carrying a plate of chips in the Snowdome canteen (no, really, I slipped while carrying my lunch!).
A bit annoyed the Manchester date was cancelled, as I wanted to do that instead. Will now have to look at either doing L2 tacked on to the end of a ski holiday in France (so I can acclimatise to altitude for 2 weeks prior to the course), or waiting until the UKSI is run again, and we have no idea when that will be. Mr Docsquid is seriously not keen on my doing the full L2, or with my being away with lots of hunky ski instructors for 2 weeks while he's at home (!) so, I may have to wait until next year
Sigh!

VolklAttivaS5, glad you are better! Mine was in plaster for 6 weeks, and then they pulled the wires out with a big pair of pliers(!)
I am still not allowed to ski for another 6 weeks because of the risk of re-fracture. It was a bad break with lots of fragments to be joined together, so I guess they are being cautious.
That said, I may still go skiing this Thursday evening - it will be 10 weeks from the date of the fracture. However I may not be able to walk as I am covering so many aerobics classes this week due to other instructors being on holiday, I may just be too tired!
The UKSI would be my preferred option, and definitely Mr DS's preferred option for me.

Thanks and ewwww! Yours did look a bit of a dog's dinner when I saw it. By the way-gas and air-had some of that in the ambulance and it's fantastic! Amazing with that on board even the slightest thing is wildly amusing.
Interesting how on the first X-ray, there was one fracture showing, and then when it was X-rayed again 4 weeks later when it had healed, there were actually 2 shaded "healed" patches, so there must have been 2 fractures in reality not 1. Mine is pretty much back to normal although I wouldn't be able to put weight on it fully with the hand bent back (as if to do a press up for example).
I wore those Flexmeter gloves when I skied just as a precaution to stop my hand bending back and they are fantastic. They mould to the heel of your hand and are lovely and cosy. Great for boarding as no need to grasp poles. Not much cop though trying to hold poles with them on, very clumsy
Anyway, I digress from the topic of this thread.
Yes, UKSI is definitely the way to go for you I feel. Keep those eyes of yours on the BASI course calendar, it's bound to appear again soonish.

You know it makes sense.

VolklAttivaS5, gas and air doesn't do it for me, nor does morphine/heroin. But give me some ibuprofen and the pain goes away.
But then again I am a bit weird.....
