Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is Austria the best overall European ski destination?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This one will get people going Toofy Grin

Criteria:

Quality of skiing
Value for money
Transfer Time
Snow History
Length of season
Hospitality of locals
Passion for skiing
Teaching
Attractiveness of resorts
Standard of resort Accomodation and food

Other countries may have an advantage on a couple of areas, but overall on the above criteria and IMO Austria has it.

Anyone care to agree or disagree.... Runs to get the tin hat.

That's very true, they have cut back flights this year. One slight disadvantage I have to agree. This would be an advantage for France especially for people darn south who have the option to travel by car. But like I say I can only think of a couple of areas where other countries would be better.

I actually think that La Rosiere is typically Un-French in many ways, and quite like Austria (apart from the lack of trees and the slow lifts)

dk100,

Before I went to Austria, I thought the resorts would be small and low with poor snow. Been twice now in mid March and had excellent conditions. Great skiing and super Apres.

Would put Austria at the top of my list, but generally go where ever I can get the best deal

If you add "sausages", "lederhosen" and "big dumplings" to your list then there would be no competition.

I spent the first 20 ish years (bar the odd year in Italy and Scotland) of ski life in France, high purpose built resorts. Recently 'discovered' Austria and, although it could still be a novelty factor, I think it outweighs France as an overall holiday destination. Best combination of skiing, charm, atmosphere, apres, people, price. Agree with frosty though, lack of Northern DIY flights makes France/Switz much more accessible.

Based on those criteria (and why would you want to change them anyway?) absolutely - Osterreich ist Weltmeister.

Agree with other comments on flights north of Manchester. Only 2 possibly 3 flights a week from Scotland to Austria, which is pathetic. It's a complete pain having to pay in excess of £265 per flight to get to Innsbruck. The closest budget flight you get is EasyJet to Munich from Edinburgh. I've seen myself flying via Stanstead to Friedrichshafen on sevaral occassions, and it's still cheaper than getting the First Choice flight to Innsbruck.

Snow history has not been questioned above.

For French resorts we often think of high stations de ski maybe with glaciers.

Austria we usually think of lower working villages.

Recently Austria has been good but it has had some shocking snow years.

If you have to book well in advance a station de ski is often a safer bet.

Awaiting first reply that says pastureland requires smaller snow depths to be skiable.

Austria has glaciers. It's not their fault that you don't think of them wink

DB, My name is not Michael Fish. Google.

Austria used to have a larger share of the market than France. Poor snow was the factor that boosted the stations de ski. Prices and popularity of DIY holidays has renewed interest in Austria.

Latchigo, this is true although there were other factors... tour ops could make more money ramming punters into rabbit hutch apartments so pumped up France, Austria was slow to update infrastructure like lifts, snowmaking, rental. Does it matter which is best?
