Poster: A snowHead
|
December 16th: Veysonnaz in Switzerland, just before the snows arrived over the weekend. A race about to take place, thanks to artifical snowmaking, but an awkward gondola decided otherwise. The frozen emergency braking system couldn't be released despite the best efforts of security personnel. The lift was eventually completely closed for repairs, a helicopter brought in to collect the marooned tourists and racers, event cancelled....

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Crikey - how on earth do you transfer someone from a gondola to a helicopter? That must take some manoeuvring to get a line inside the car

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Good point Tony Ellwood, a frustrating day for those in the lift, but I bet they will be dining out on the helicopter rescue for weeks.
And what about the dramatic change in conditions. In PG's picture: no snow. Webcam today. Amazing, or what?

Jonpim,
Are you sure that's Switzerland? Since when did they have red-indians?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

As scary as it must be, imagine how cool being airlifted from a gondola would be.

What would they have done if it had been windy? Is it possible for people to get stuck in these things for days waiting for conditions to allow rescue? (Sorry - get a bit neurotic about lifts when they stop mid-journey.)

DavidS, if it had been very windy the lift wouldn't have been running at all. No problem.

Ah there you have me, DavidS. There's always the exception. But nobody was hurt in that one either. Look on the bright side. PS, I hate being on a cold exposed chair when it stops. Could stand a bit of a halt in a gondola better, out of the wind.

That's why it's important to take with you chocolate and hip-flask. If you are really worried, you could also take thermos of coffee, mobile phone and computer so you could keep posting here and watch a couple of DVDs to while away the hours. In fact, of marooned in a gondola and all occupants are suitably equipped you could have quite a party.
Not much fun on chairlift though.

obviously, if you're caught on a lift when one of these things happens you need to be on the phone calling it in to Snowheads

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Good point, I had PG's number in my mobile anyway when the Tignes lift had problems. We should all buddy up
I'm still getting stick at home about that in fact, calling PG and not calling Mrs Ise to let her know I was not involved was not well received.
