It is time to start the usual Austria thread again. Snow is expected at the week-end, but first of all, the glacier resort of Pitztal opens Saturday!
Pitztal installed the IDE snomakers that are able to make snow even at 30C, the same type which has been installed in Zermatt, too.
Another new development is the first green restaurant of the Alps. This 'Hütte' is built at 2300m and all the energy they use is from the heat of the Sun and the ground.

I'm going to Kaprun/Kitzsteinhorn in a month... Glacier looks a bit sad at the moment... Having no clue how things tend to develop up there...
Really do hope things will improve over the weekend and that some of it will stick on the glacier... Last year the conditions during that week were pretty awesome!

Ronald, Most of the European glaciers have had a bad Summer. A number of Austrian, Italian and French glaciers have had to close prematurely.
kerekip, Have Pitztal been blasting those IDE snowmakers prior to opening? Have they delivered on their promise? Any pics?

Up to 50cm snow is predicted for Vorarlberg and Tyrol. 15-20cm for Upper-Austria.
Just to remind you, about 1m snow fell in Austria on the first week-end of September last year.

Off walking near Flachau next week so just checked the webcams. Snow above 1300m, it seems! Obviously it will all be gone in no time at all, but still ... makes me smile!
Zauchensee looks positively skiable

Austria had a cracking start last season, with resorts opening early, and some great early off psite. I wonder if the same will happen this year?

Kaunertal glacier also opened today. Now all the glacier resorts are open in Austria.
Sölden is preparing for the WC race. Snow guns blast out the white flakes down the World Cup piste every night.

Another snow alert for Friday. Snow level at 1400-1500m.
Local met office reports that temps in Austria have been 3-5 degrees colder than usual since September 12.

Heavy snowing in some parts of Austria. Turracher Hohe, which was the first resort to open last season, had 40cm fresh snow. This is not typical at this time of the year.
Watch for the highest parts of Salzgurg regions. 75cm fresh snow fell in some areas.
Kaprun-Kitzsteinhorn glacier had 40cm fresh snow so far, and the snow level is at 700m.
Bad Gastein had 10cm fresh snow.
Do not get too excited, temps rise next week, autumn is back.

sharon1953, OK, this is for you, as far as I remember you like Obertauern. I got an e-mail from a local guy who went up today and he says there is at least 30-40cm fresh now.
He may send some pictures later.

kerekip, I know...I've been watching the webcams - it's looking good. We went back to Obertauern twice this year, grabbed another 4 days in April, they had a huge dump, flights were cheap and the hotels were giving the rooms away (as it was the end of the season), so couldn't resist it! We are going to Hinterglemm in March next year...lower altitude, so not quite so confident of good snow! We felt we had done and seen everything in Obertauern having been now 4 times, but you certainly have to take your hats off to their snow record, you can almost set your watch by it. Disappointing that Thomsonfly are closing their flights to Salzburg as soon as Easter ends, when so many Austrian resorts are still in full swing up to the end of April.

sharon1953, Been to Saalbach-Hinterglemm six times so far, twice in March. It was mild, but the pistes were OK until noon. Typical spring condition.
Weather is always unpredictable, I hope you will better luck with it in March.

kerekip, Thanks, I'm sure it will ok, as we use Snowbikes now and they love soft spring snow! We normally go around 23rd Feb, but the flights and hotels dropped in price on 7th March (its the first week of off peak) and we noticed over the past few years that Austria seems to always get a new flurry of snow, end of Feb beginning of March, but when we booked the flights we were still set on Obertauern, so in hindsight, we probably would have gone a couple of weeks earlier to Hinterglemm. We went there 3 years ago, loved the place, but I was still struggling with skis, so didn't see too much of it, but after 12 years of struggling I discovered Snowbikes, (another thing to thank Obertauern for) and now I can go anywhere - so really excited about covering such a large area. I guess you must know the place like the back of your hand now !
