Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Where to go on 4th April?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just had a great trip to Whistler on 4th April shelved thanks to Zoom going bust. Luckily it looks like the price of the flights will be refunded (paid on credit card). These were £500 each and I cant find anything near this price to get from Manchester to Vancouver for 2 weeks. Looks like were (2 of us) are going to have to settle for a week in Europe instead.

Any ideas of where is likely to be good at the start of April, or is it best to wait for a late deal. Unfortunatey we have to go durig school hols as were both teachers.

Have a budget of about £800 each.

I usually wait until a few weeks before planning any trip to go where the best conditions are. In April you will be best with somewhere high up. Val Thorens perhaps?

If the last few seasons are anything to go by (which they probably aren't wink ) you should have a good choice of places with good conditions in early April. But it isn't usually too busy (great time to go, actually) so I agree you could afford to wait and see how the snow is going. However, if it's poor, don't expect any high-altitude bargains!

Drluvski, Early April is not late. We are normally still skiing everything (3,600 - 1650) at the end of April. Very Happy

jb1970,Thanks, just checked out Thomas Cook. They have flights to Vancouver but theyre £800. Just a bit too pricey. Our DIY trip was meant to cost £980 for 2 weeks including flights, condo(nice and spacious) and transfer. Going for £800 flights would push it all up to £1280 for 2 weeks. Think were going to stick with Europe for this trip.

Never know, there might be late deals to Canada. Will have to keep our fingers crossed.

Couldn't agree more - virtually every ski area in the Alps (if not all?) will still be open in early April - though conditions will obviously vary. Austria in particular is very good at keeping its (mainly grassy) lower runs open even in very low places like Soll etc and France will more or less be fully open as the ski areas are (usually) higher.

I skied serre Chevalier in the first week of April this year. As we were based in Briancon (1200m) we were expecting action on the upper slopes only - especially as a lot of the runs back to Briancon (and the other villages) are south-ish facing. BUT Very Happy There was a massive snowfall on our arrival day and we had wall to wall powder for 2 days - the streets of Briancon looked more like January than April.

Drluvski, aim to go high in whichever country you choose would be the best maxim (taken from something rob@rar said elsewhere). You should be fine that week.

This isn't a definitive list by any means, but places could include
For Austria, places like Obertauern, Obergurgl, Kaprun,
For France, those already named above, Tignes, Val D'Isere, Alpe D'Huez, three valleys, Les Arcs, La Plagne, Avoriaz,, Chamonix
For Switzerland, Saas Fee, Zermatt,
For Italy, Cervinia,

You should also listen to anecdotal evidence of other places that people have been to that have been good at that time of year.

We typically go that week as a family and have had some great trips. Obertauern, Alps D'Huez and next year La Plagne.

Thanks for all the help. Will keep an eye out for deals to these resorts closer to April.

Ray Zorro, I would not advise ADH in April - too much south facing skiing and the more northerly slopes tend to be the lower ones. No problem last year (obviously). However ... ahem!!!
