Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St Anton-Rental?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are off over to St Anton for Christmas and I just started browsing for rental ski's prices online and have been shocked to discover that the rental prices ars almost double that of France and Italy!!!
Can anyone shed any light on what the reason for this could be? I am paying for my family of 5 which includes 3 uni student children and this is going to make a bigger than expected dent in my budget Sad

I didn't hire when I was there but didn't have the impression that ski hire was more expensive than an equivalent french resort. might be better to wait till you get there or ring to speak to someone.

perhaps one of the residnetn local experts will tell you the best place to hire from

northantsred, wow, you're right, approx €105 for a week rental in Meribel, same week is €169 in St Anton - using snowrental.net

I recently booked the kids skis for Meribel using sport2000 web site, saved 34%, maybe that could be worth a look if you haven't tried already.

masmith, just tried that site and it tells me I can't have my first days skiing on 21/12/2008, must be a glitch on the site?

northantsred, From what I hear that would be standard for VIP skis in Lech,St Anton and Zurs!

I was suprised when I heard this first as Normally Austria is Cheeper than France. Good luck with the search

169 eu week....?? assume that is 6 days..!! but even for VIP skis that is enough to rush out and buy your own.

I haven't used Snowretal because they can't seem to tell what you will get by pre-booking.

I normally trawl all the shops but recently I have found this to be a fruitless task so will be carrying them in future.

I am looking too for a group of 10 in early Jan. Prices in St Anton are a complete rip off - way more than France and also significantly more than other resorts just down the road eg Ischgl.
I have trien Skiset, Snowrental and Intersport - but all similarly expensive.
Sound like a closed shop ..... Ski Republic need to get in there.
Ski World have 25% off their gear hire at mo - but you can still equal that by direct online booking.

Suspect its expensive because its austria premier ski area - check whether the prices include ski storage as some of the accomodation in st anton is uphill of the main lift. If you are going to pay that price you may as well hire from the big shop under the main buble /cable car (the swish cable car with the ferris gondola where you can leave skis and boots)

St Anton is expensive as the rental shops are all owned by only a few families (as far as I'm aware), so have the market cornered. Would it not be cheaper buying your own stuff? Check out this website for insider knowledge on St Anton http://www.st-antonamarlberg.eu/where_to_stay.html You might still be able to pick up a bargain at your local ski shop - traditionally May to Sept is a good time to grab a bargain. Ebay also good and I have bought both second hand and new stuff for my wife and kids and it's worked out cheaper than renting, even at French rates.

Anyway, you'll have a great time no doubt. St Anton and Lech are my fave places in the world.
