Dear All,
With the current UK credit crunch are you still planning to go skiing this coming winter (northern) ski season 2008/9? The BBC are looking to do a report on the Credit Crunch and we want to know if you are still planning on going away skiing this season.
Please let us know if you are still off skiing...
Thanks,
Ben

bbc140, welcome to snowHeads.
We are all hardcore here and would rather cut an ear off with a rusty saw than give up our skiing.
Saying that there are a few threads knocking about of cutbacks that some are making, so have a browse around.
Here is one thread... http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=41271&highlight=

I would rather have my ear bitten off by an angry Ray Zorro then lose my skiing.

Thought the credit crunch was more a lack of money in the mortgage markets? But I spose the knock on effect is increase in mortgage payments for some which adds to the increase in fuel costs. Glad I'm on a fixed rate for another 7 years
But regarding high fuel prices and impending recession/depression/doom, none of this will stop my plans for this season (unless fuel prices more than doubles again).

Tignes and Utah already booked, contemplating a sneaky week in St Anton at xmas which will probably cost less than staying in the UK when you consider all the travelling to and fro, fancy food etc etc

Is this thread for people to express their frustrations on the fact that they maybe feeling the pinch a little which may or may not
effect their ability to endulge their love of the snow
or a licence for some to gloat about their wealth and how many vacations they are going to have in the
next twelve months
I will get my annual week away in Feb still, however I am having to sacrifice more then normal to be able
to afford it.

bbc140, have you actually been skiing? If so you will have realised that skiing is a sport and not a holiday on the beach and attracts different types of people. Generally you will find people who ski are not likely to lay about and give up something they love....
You should really be asking the question "Credit Crunch, Affecting your champagne consumption?"

I was chatting to a shop owner this evening in resort about this today, he is very concerned and has so far had an appauling summer season......and bookings are down for next season thus far.
Personally I hope it's all hype (or what's the opposite of hype) and that skiiers will still come...............if not I'll go bust!!

daehwons, that's a load of old rubbish. Holidays on the beach also attract 'different types of people'. And the majority of people who book ski holidays don't spend their entire summer obsessing about snow on the internet. In fact, lots of the people we see in the winter are on what they consider to be a second holiday and they would prioritise their summer break over a winter one. It might be a 'sport' to you, but for lots of people it's just a fun thing to do.

Renry, My sentiments exactly - was beginning to look like a bragathon. In answer to bbc140, our 1 weeks holiday a year will still be a skiing one, as it has been for the past 12 years. It's a struggle, always is, but well worth it - thank god ski gear doesn't wear out, and dressing up at night just doesn't happen!

Precisely why asking the question on a ski forum is likely to get the answer it has.

I have just handed in my resignation last week to retire early.
The reason = need more time to ski.
Don't believe in mortgage so haven't got one.
Never live on credit myself. Cannot understand why should I spend the money I haven't got. What's wrong with spending it after having got it and live within one's means.

The credit crunch is a story whipped up by the media that becomes a self forefilling(?) prophecy, the more we think about it the worse it will become, and the bigger the story becomes.....thats why the media loves it.

JimSearle,
Believe me credit crunch is very real and is affecting every country. It is possibly the legal "pyramid" system that the financial people have been copying each other to make more money out of a fixed capital. As a result many people can live a life style beyond their means as long as the crunch is kept at bay.

bbc140, Please realise when making your report, that the most active visitors of this site see skiing as a sport, not a holiday. Some of us even instructors in the sport, either on the dryslopes/snowdomes, or in the Alpes.
Therefor it will be hard to get a good realisation of what the average visitor of skiresorts will do from just this site.
That said, off to my first week of the 08-09 season this next week: Instructor training in a snowdome.

How nice it must be not to HAVE to have one, not much to do with belief I fear... more of a necessary evil if you don’t want to live in a tent, pass your hard earned money to a landlord with no return, or worse still, live with your parents until you can retire!

the no mortgage thing can quite easily be done by the time you're 40!!
Work your absolute b***cks off in very highly paid jobs, keep extending yourself with property and then quit and sell the lot...move to the Alps buy something a lot cheaper and hey presto 18 weeks of skiing 34 weeks of mountain biking and no mortgage!!

It must be nice to be able to live like that. Most people have got a mortgage and/or credit such as car loan, credit cards, bank loan, etc.
