Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tow bar mounted ski carriers

Thule in the US do a ski carrier mounted to the "tow hitch" 987xt. I have not been able to find anything similar for the UK. Anyone any experience or knowledge?.

kind of like the thread on roof boxes, try www.roofbox.co.uk if they don't stock it they can probably get it for you

Vertically challenged. Convenience. Ski racing, so too many skis for the roof /car. Wanting to avoid trailer (for ferry costs, etc.) or roof box for fuel economy. Potential storage savings. Need to feel a little different.
Choose one of the above.

No first hand experience. But I've seen a rare few in the parking lot. I suspect it hurts fuel economy just as bad or as good as roof carrier (which is probably not too much either way). Not to mention it gets a lot more road dirt than roof carry (what does the back of your car looks like after a full day's winter driving?).

Like all rear mounted carriers, there's the big worry about backing the car into anything and demaging the ski/bike etc. Been there, done that (no demage, but took down a tree branch with my bike! Embarassed ).

I'm not that tall but I have no trouble putting skis on the roof. (I have a car, not a SUV. Smile But if I have an SUV, I would be able to put all 10 paris of skis inside! I managed 6 with my car, plus 2 passenger AND their luggage which includes backpacks and climbing skin etc. Smile )

Nearly took roof-mounted bikes through a height barrier to a car park myself, Embarassed hence the preference for something I can at least see in the rear view mirror. More pertinently, with six or seven in a MPV and luggage in the roof box there still needs to be somewhere for skis, or we leave someone behind.

For anyone interested www.roofbox.co.uk confirmed that MaxxRaxx do a bike carrier which can take an adapter for skis. The Thule 987xt is only available in the US.

abc, think about holding a tea tray out your sunroof-pretty hard to hold up beacuse the wind resistance is high whereas if you held it out your boot it would be pretty damn easy. For the same weight (assuming roofbox/towbar thing are similar) the roofbox would hurt economy more...

You could try "plan B" - skis on the roof, luggage at the rear of the car e.g. Thule BackUp rear storage box
