Eleven passengers of a gondola at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, have had their liftpasses seized for smoking marijuana in the cabin.
The state forbids the use of ski resort facilities while under the influence of alcohol or narcotics...

That's a big gondola! Revoking lift privileges seems a bit harsh.

Well, at least the police weren't called (I assume). I imagine smoking grass is illegal in Colorado.

That depends on whether or not you mind having your holiday ruined (or worse), if one of these idiots is out of control on the piste.
I sat in a gondola in Austria with two Americans who did the same thing - unfortunately they got off before I could report them.

Lorraine Agass, wow - remind me not to take a nip from my hipflask in your gondola.

As far as I can remember from my student days a nip of scotch and being stoned didn't have the same effect!

Hhmmm. Interesting story. If these guys were smoking dope in a lift full of other people then they deserve all they got. That was stupid and selfish.
However, it would seem Lorraine Agass might be guilty of a little disinformation.
1. If comparing adverse effects of different drugs it wouild seem sensible to compare similar doses. Stoned is equivalent to drunk - not just a nip of scotch (ref. (1),(2)).
2. Cannabis does affect the brain differently from alcohol. Alcohol makes you over-confident, aggressive and dis-coordinated. Cannabis makes you relaxed, euphoric and dis-coordinated. (ref. (1)). Who would you rather have skiing past you: the pissed or the stoned?
Since the discover of endogenous cannabis receptors in 1988 and the natural agonist anandamide in 1992 there has been an explosion in cannabis research.

I agree with Lorraine Agass, theres nothing worse than being confined in a bubble/ bus/ car with someone who's smoking. Id have had a massive go at them - theres a time and a place for hash and its called UNIVERSITY!

As far as I'm concerned it's neither here nor there if it was plain tobacco or weed, smoking in the gondola is bad enough and reason enough to take their passes.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

ise, I was very displeased when my (then small) kids' ESF instructor subjected them to passive smoking in the gondalas. (That's going back a number of years - things may have improved!)

When smoking was allowed on the top deck of buses the last (23:40) No.47 from Winchester to Southampton used to get very mellow on the top deck (not from tobacco!) and us non-smokers even went up there to take in the atmosphere. With the total banning of smoking the youths drank alcopops instead and behaviour became rowdy, so much so that the bus company stopped running this late service.

You know it makes sense.

I live in The Netherlands , I cant see what all the fuss is about
And in the US they think they have Freedom ???
Seriously, most lift operators forbid smoking not only is it antisocial/Irritable for fellow non-smoking passengers it is a potential fire hazard in the cabins. Most Ski clothing is not fireproof.
In the summer with the resulting litter from smokers on the green slopes also creates a fire hazzard.
Has anyone seen a smoker pickup there butts and take them home with them ????

I have not skied in many years without being high. I don't run into anybody. I was joking about the penalty being harsh, they could have gone to jail. Most of the skiers who ski high are very skilled and pose no threat. Drunk skiers (and most resorts sell booze at the base lodge if not on top of the mountain!) are dangerous. The really dangerous drunks are usually not experienced skiiers.
I think they had the whole cabin, no smoke allergic or fresh air freaks were in there with them. Eleven smokers pretty much fill any gondy I've heard of, usually 4 fit in a gondola.
They were snowboarders so probably were already dangerous, the smoke would probably mellow them out a bit and make them safer to others...
