Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Revelstoke round-up at end of first season

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The first season at Revelstoke wound up at the end of April. So, how did the opening year go? Skier visits were apparently 44 percent higher than anticipated, and snow was in abundance....Next year could be even better, as Revelstoke Mountain Resort will have even more to offer, including:

*The gondola will extend an additional 885 feet to the village site, making Revelstoke Mountain Resort the longest lift-serviced vertical descent in North America at 5,620 feet.
*The new village will be completed with: a full-service restaurant; retail and rental shops; lift ticket and skier facilities; and additional parking for 1,000 vehicles.
*A new high-speed quad chairlift in the North Bowl area will open up an extra 900 acres of intermediate terrain (ski runs and tree skiing), as well as 300 additional acres of expert skiing.
*Extended glading and trail cutting will expand both the ski area and the existing 500,000 acres of Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing terrain.
*Cat skiing terrain will increase to 2,210 acres.
*Revelstoke Mountain Resort will become the only resort in the world to offer lift-skiing, cat-skiing and helicopter skiing right from the village base.

Its Very Very low at the bottom, snow was not great at the beggining of Feb when we stopped by, and the town of Revelstoke needs a facelift. Might be nice in 5 years or so and the plans are very very impressive, but last season the reality was somewhat different.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Was there in the end of Feb and the town itself is definately not the most pretty but the terrain there was phenomenal. The mountain definately has great potential if money is invested wisely and an airport closer than Calgary can be found. However part of the appeal was the fact that some of the tree skiing and north bowl particularly are so undeveloped; although eliminating some of the hiking would be nice!!

Snowface71, welcome to snowHead s

My Bro was there for a day or so at the beginning of April and said the snow was thin at the base and lower mountain (but then anywhere in the northern hemisphere was thin compared to Fernie Toofy Grin )

Snowface71, welcome. I was disappointed to hear about the introduction of a lift in North Bowl, I feel it would be best left well alone! As for the hiking I think it makes it worth it earning some gravity and I think it stops people stealing freshies from those who want to work.

Revelstoke is a sh*t hole. Hopefully the resort village will be a massive improvement on this-wouldn't be hard!

I am eager to return when some new lifts have been placed.

Have to say the town was an experience when we were there in March, skiing was good and snow great ( had just dumped 12" )
Rossfra8, Tend to agree about North Bowl but from what we heard its to remove the walk out along the track Puzzled

Expanding terrain is a plus point, as as the numbers show, its going to be a place of the future. Unfortunately a shame that its going to be comercialised and it was nice to see the place in its raw state Smile

Bones, deffinately be heading back. The walk out is a bit of a pain but worth it after the turns. Did you hit any of the drops in North Bowl? Notably the big cornice line you can't miss.. got a cracking video of hitting the far right hand side!

I enjoy the hike to the top just off to the right of the 4 man chair, do you know if the lift will run to the very top point there?

Not sure I agree about the town - its just a typical Canadian town, possibly glossier than Golden. Making it into Whistler or Banff would be a big mistake.

The new vert next season is a bit of a con as they are adding vert at the bottom of the resort. I would imagine they did well this season as every ski bum in Alberta, BC, Washington and Montana as a minimum was itching to have a crack at it.

Rossfra8, As to drop into North Bowl, no we skied into it ducking under the rope just after the cliff warnings Smile As I was skiing with a bad knee and warned to avoid bumps and drop offs thought it best not to Toofy Grin would love to see that Vid tho. Did see some people ski the chutes and looked great Sad

Think the walk pained me more because of my knee rather than anything else. tried herringboning it but dragged my leg, skating was ok but couldnt lift the leg well either.

Not sure if they will take the lift to the top or not, would think not as its new this season, so making earn their turns if they wish to ski it. again we didnt due to my leg problems.

fatbob, Agree its just a typical Canadian town, couple of blocks downtown area - bit bigger than Golden in that respect. Cant see it ever getting like Banff, would think the new Village area will probably be more like Whistler eventually - purpose built homogeneous resort. Agree regarding the Vert but as you will have to ski back to the new village rather than park at the existing car parks, and gain more. we did see quite a few Brits heading that way, it was given good press over here this season.

Hoping to get back there for a couple of days at least next season all being well, then leave well alone for a number of years Toofy Grin
