Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Planning Trips for next year..... help!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I have been skiing in Pas, Andorra for the last 2 years whilst I learnt, I am now capable of sking blues, reds and some easy blacks if I have someone to follow!

I am looking to try somewhere a bit different this year, and following suggestions from friends have been looking at Tignes/Val Thorens.

However the problems is there is just me, and I can't seem to find any reasonable priced accomodation/flight packages for the solo traveller.

I don't really want to just have 1 holiday but not sure I want all 3 weeks in andorra again, don't mind going there in march as the snow is historically good then but some where else would be good to!

I am looking to ski wk commencing 13th Dec, 10th Jan and 14th March.

Not so keen on DIY cos I don't know where I am going or speak french.... since ill be on my own I think that might be a bit much!

Most things are coming out at £600-£700 for flights and accomodation, I don't really want to sprend much more than £500 for each trip on this component, as by the time I have bought a lift pass, and ski school and rented skis it gets expensive and I might as well go to Canada!

Have tried inspired to ski, mark warner, Crystal and neilson?

Anyone got any good location suggestions that are going to be in my budget or websites to try??? Very Happy

charlotte366, how fixed are your dates? In March the MSB might fit your bill, and will most likely be either starting or ending on the middle Sat of March...and if you were able to delay your Jan dates, there's the Birthday Bash to consider, 31 Jan - 7 Feb...and in December, a (large) group of us is planning on going to Tignes for a few days (I'm going 9th - 14th)...

Cheers,

Jan and March dates are slightly flexible, my work planning board is free round then, just selected them cos thats when I went this year.

Dec might be able to go on 11th dec, just need to wait for my exam dates to be released by the ICAEW institute. As the week prior to the 13th is my exam week!

Won't know until September.......is that 2late?

If you want to save money, DIY to Austria. It's easy.

First pick a cheap flight (www.skyscanner.com and www.kayak.com).

Then find a resort near your destination airport (www.bergfex.com is good for locating resorts in Austria)

Go to that resort's website (they all have English sites) and search for accom.

Go to www.oebb.at to find train connections from the airport to your resort.

You're done. And I'll bet it costs well under half of the prices you've mentioned.

I honestly don't understand how tour operaters stay in business.

You can do the same to Switzerland or France, but it will probably cost a little more.

charlotte366, re teh December trip, this is run by Mountainsun who are well regarded here. I am co-ordinating the trip but folk have to book themselves. September might be too late but it's worth keeping in mind and trying when you know your availability

Have you thought about a chalet where you can mix with other people. Some do single rooms but failing that operators like Skiworld and Total seem be better value for single supplements than the big TO's.

When in Tignes in April I was speaking to a lady who'd done several succesful trips via the "solo travellers" forum on the neilson website - like minded travallers can join forces to go together and avoid single supplements.

Also, I've been browsing the crystal brochure and have noticed several places which offer "no single supplement" although admittedly not specifically in Tignes / VT

But as has been mentioned, the bashes are a great way to meet lots of other people and generally have a great trip

thanks guys

has a look through the crystal brochure, but not that many places in general without huge single supplements .......

why are we poor solo travellers penalised!

i think this skiing habit I have developed will become very expensive!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I've found that hotels are better than chalets for avoiding single supplements, but chalets are more sociable for single travellers.

charlotte366, there is a snowHead called queen of sheba who runs a website for solo skiers: www.pistepals.com - I haven't used it myself as I either ski with my family or go on the Bashes.
I would strongly recommend trying one of the Bashes - as vetski says, the MSB should fit your March dates - the only problem being that you will never want to ski solo again.

charlotte366, Silver Ski have 3 chalets in Rebert Villages (Les Menuires) that have a single room. A bit of a box, and off the kitchen, but generally very cheap. Chalet holidays are very social and |Silver Ski do ski hosting 4 days a week where you meet and ski with other guests. This will always give you someone to ski with.

Charlotte if you wait til Jan you'll pick up a bargain - room to yourself ensuite at around £300.00 for a catered chalet with ski guiding included.
otherwise Jan will be in teh £500.00's for something for one and nice or higher prices in March.

Don't do France!!

Austria tends to work out quite a bit cheaper, and you can certainly do better by booking late.

Last year, as a solo traveller, I got a week from 5th January half board at the Hotel Brau in Zell am Ziller for £361 with Crystal, including flights from Bristol and ski carriage. IIRC, this was about £200 off the brochure price, booked on 3rd December.

I usually go 1st or 2nd week in January, and usually book around the end of November/start of December, and am always traveling by myself.

Although next year, I may go a few weeks later, and go on the Snowheads Birthday Bash if that is taking place in Ischgl, as looks likely. snowHead snowHead

charlotte366, there is also a singles ski company - called singlesport run by a lady called Ruth Paul. I think it is totally non profit making but it is just so like minded singles can ski together. http://www.singlesport.com/

It would have been helpful to declare that in the posts where you were pimping your services. I'm pleased to see that you now announce your affiliation in your signature. I'm sure you understand that people can take umbrage if a new user of the forum uses his first few posts to promote their commercial interests, especially if they do so without declaring that interest.

Nickster, just a bit of friendly advice: blatant advertising is not really acceptable as it would soon become a free-for-all. A link in a signature seems to be OK, and replying to a direct request for help might be OK if the reply is relevant. Over the top advertising will soon incur the wrath of the moderators, so it's probably best just to contribute expertise rather than simply highlighting professional services.

charlotte366, have you considered using a youth hostel? Bad Gastein has a really good youth hostel. When i'm in Gastein, I always go to their public bar because they have the best beer in town!! Toofy Grin Here's their web address: www.euro-youth-hotel.at

The hostel is really close to the ski lifts, railway station, apres ski and is full of like minded skiers. It's a really friendly place too. Have a look at their website, it should help keep the cost down.

You can get to Bad Gastein from Salzburg on the train so that should also help save the pennies.

Have fun wherever you go! snowHead
