Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

mid layer advice please

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

A bit of advice please. I was thinking of buying a new ski jacket, an all singing all dancing money no object jacket.....then i came to my senses and realised my mountain equipment coat is still as good as new.
So my question is, what good quality mid layer can I spend the money on instead? Is there one with a lift pass pocket on the sleeve, as this is the one thing missing from my ME coat and after years of practicing yoga moves at the turnstiles I can see the benefit of having a pocket on the arm!

thanks for any help.

@howster, it doesn’t have a pocket on the arm but you might find similar tech that does anyway I most days use an Arc’teryx Atom which I find extraordinarily comfortablein a very wide range of temperatures.

Thanks new name, that looks like some top quality gear!!

I've just bought, off amazon, some lift pass holders that go round the wrist in a smiliar way to the phone holders people use for jogging. They look like they might do the job, time will tell

My lift pass lives in my left front trouser pocket...

mine has worked fine in a leftjacket front pocket on an old coat that has no arm pocket.

Second the advice re the Atom. Love mine. I almost think one is not enough...

one is definitely enough at that price........

ok well if the amazon pass holder ends up being cr@p i'll stick with my left jacket pocket, i'm getting on a bit now and cramp sets in when the pass reader is on my wrong side...... Smile

Patagonia Nano Air . . .genius jacket, I'm now the proud owner of two . . .very light, breathable, covers a variety of temps like the more expensive Atom . . .Nano is a better fit for me though

Hoodless version for midlayer . . .hoody version (in fetching blue nino camo) for pub/apres/general posing

Newer version has two (rather than one) small upper chest pockets - no arm pocket though . . .bought my earlier version for £80 from John Lewis

I use a Baselayer and a TNF Thermobobble as mid layer

and the hoodless is in the sale right now in M.

Easily warm enough at the EOSB for all day. I also carry a jacket in the rucksack.

If it is really cold I use a thin Gillet fleece under the thermobobble or the 800Pro down TNF jacket instead.

I like the Arcteryx Atom, although for more warmth I use a Salomon Halo down mid-layer (either with or without a hood). Very warm and handles moisture well.

just an alternative to padded insulated midlayers - I really like this (although I have the one that whitedot commissioned from ME)

I find it plenty warm enough and breathes/wicks better than a down/primaloft layer

I often carry a very light weight arcteryx down gilet as an emergency layer (incredibly small and light to pack)

Without giving particular brands, look for Polartec....and choose the product according to warmth/wind proof....Power Stretch is excellent.

For more warmth, look for Down or Primaloft.

thanks all!!

i have a decent Montane jacket, primaloft i think, which would do a decent job. But i like the look of the ME hooded option, as well as the Arc'Teryx but this may be out of my price range.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

The answer to that question (isn't it always with ski stuff!) is most/all of the above. I have a few that I use depending on type of skiing and weather

ME Eclipse (I have the non hooded one)
Arcteryx Procline Comp (ski biased jacket similar to the Atom)-hasn't stopped me wanting another Atom though...
Primaloft gilet
Haglofs synthetic jacket like the TNF one above
Rab down like the Salomon Halo mentioned above

Think that should cover it! Obviously these can be used for other things in the interim...
