Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I never go on a ski holiday - but split my time between the Belledonne / Chartreuse and Chablais / Aravis mountains. Probably skiing a couple of times per week between - well when the snow falls in the Autumn to when it melts in the early summer. 8 or 9 months per year. However I moderated any observations I made on information from Meteo France. For example snow cover in la Plagne and l'Alpe d'Huez was actually better last year between early February and mid March - and 2007 was not exactly remembered as good year (but maybe not so bad either).

Serre Chevalier, which has been mentioned above, benefits from Italian weather systems but can also be affected by Atlantic fronts which make it over the Lauteret. The Brianconnais area can have untypical weather patterns compared to the rest of the Alps. I checked the snowfall and there were some small top ups in January but the snow only really came good in the area from early March. Most of the winter the people down there were skiing on early December's large dump. The main difference between 2007 and 2008 was a cold December and no rain during the warm January and February (temperatures similar to 2007 - about 3C above long term average). If you look at the la Grave snow levels it flatlined from early Jan to mid March - you might have thought the resort had given up and died. Okay the weather station gets affected by wind so snow depths are not typical.

Massif Central and Jura were much better this year.

davidof, from what I remember approximatly 15th Janaury the Brianconnais had a huge dump of fresh snow.

Just to comment on my experience of the season 2007-2008, I had a brilliant time with conditions with the early dump before Christmas. Unlike last year there were barely any icy pistes. Although it was only one week Embarassed Sad and 95% of it was on piste.

Guess my experience this year was pretty much the same as everyone.
Zermatt in mid January was very good with a big dump the day before arrival and another on the Tuesday. really good cover and I was able to ski right back into town.
Foppolo in February was way too hot and it hadn't snowed for a while. I know it's only 1600 - 2200m but 15 degrees at that time of year is silly.
ADH Easter week was excellent. Half a metre on Good Friday the day before we arrived and it snowed most evenings that week too. coupled with blue skies most days (best week I had this year definitely).
The next week in LDA was great too with excellent cover down low and I skied on the other side for the first time too.
