Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

From the GSSG "remote road access in the Aosta Valley keeps the Italians in Courmayeur." Does one need 4WD to access La Thuile? or does this mean that the Italians are just too tired(after driving from Torino etc) to negotiate the final 15km of non-autostrada?? Hoping to visit over new year.

Hairpin bends all the way up but you don't need a 4WD unless the snow is heavy. Chains are a must though just in case.
Coaches get up there.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

No need for 4WD, it's a pretty good road and usually kept clear but as snowplough said lots of hairpins.

The Italian bus drivers are happy enough overtaking cement mixers on it (in summer though), so I should think a car would have few problems. Also, most of the hairpins are at the bottom (immediately above Pre St. Didier). Once you're up into the valley proper, it's reasonably straight (ish) with less and more spread out hairpins.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Been to La Thuile a few times driving from Chamonix. The road is kept clear like many members have confirmed and 4WD is not essential unless you hit a heavy dump before the roads can be cleared. It is definitely better than going up Deux Alpes (10 hairpins) or LAlpes Du Heuz (20 hairpins).
