Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gstaad any good?

Going skiing for the weekend and could only get reasonable flights to Geneva.
Most of the French resorts look like they're going to be ultra slushy (Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz) so need to look a bit further.
Don't want to go more than 2 hours from Geneva by car though.
Any ideas for resorts?
Gstaad, Verbier?

Alreday been to Chamonix this season and don't want to again this year.

GordonFreeman,
Never been to Gstaad but apart from the Diablarets glacier it is meant to be very low. Was in Nendaz at the beginning of April last year and in what was a poor year generally the skiing was good especially up towards Mont Fort sector of Verbier.

GordonFreeman, don't think I'd bother with Gstaad if I were you, it is indeed quite low and you have to make quite a trek to get to any of the slopes from the town, it's also stupidly expensive, though still popular with the fur coat brigade I believe wink

GordonFreeman, check the weather forecast. It might not be as warm as you think

Morzine is slushy at the bottom though although how far away is AVoriaz from it?

Avoriaz isn't far (1.5 hrs from Geneva same as Morzine). If you stay in Morzine it's a short ride on the ski bus to the base of the Gondola at Les Prodains which takes you straight up to Avoriaz.

Or, why not look for a cheap apartment in Avoriaz? If it gets warm stay on the French side as Swiss side will be slushier.

My parents are off to La Clusaz this weekend aswell (without me) snow looks really good, and I think it's less than two hours from Geneva.

Matt Exley,

I LOVE La Clusaz, and we've never had bad snow there but I think that's more by good luck than altitude. Hope your folks have a great time (without you Twisted Evil !)

marmalade, it's awesome, we've been to la clusaz six times in the last three seasons! Last april the snow wasn't great, but the snow on Balme was perfect spring snow. Looking at the webcam it looks like the conditions are as good as they were in February when I went. Where do you normally stay?

GordonFreeman, Verbier defo... dead easy drive from GVA too - too late to safely go to the otherwise brilliant PdeS.

GordonFreeman, Having been here all seaon I'd say that 'Gstaad' is better than most ( when I say Gstaad, I include Saanenmoser etc) .. 'As Height Goes'.... indeed it is much better than Wengen. I would not come here this weekend though as the resort is closing / has closed down .. despite the snow. Head somewhere where they they are keeping stuff open ... and the Glacier 3000 is so docile you will fall asleep/.

D G Orf, As someone who has only ever been Wengen afaics ( and not for at least 4 years ) .. your comments are totally inaccurate. Gstaad has been better than Wengen week-on-week all year ... try skiing .. Evil or Very Mad

Agenterre, I do love inaccuracy, firstly I was in Wengen 3 seasons ago (or two years) not 4 years, secondly I've been all over Switzerland including Gstaad, though I actually stayed in Schonreid, can't remember the name of the hotel but it was virtually next door to the railway station there and run by a ski racer or former racer. Now I didn't say that Gstaad was lower than Wengen (though it is at 1050M compared to Wengen at 1274M) I just agreed that it was low, however from reccolection most of the slopes in the area are a bit of a trek or a bus/train ride away from the center of Gstaad itself

For your future delectation and delight and before you start making inaccurate accusations I've also been to:

Davos
St. Moritz
Zermatt
Adleboden
& Engelberg

And in addition to the above ski resorts I've been to:

Just about everywhere in the Bernese Oberland
Bern
Thun
Spiez
Sarnen
Stans
Engelberg
Geneva
Schafhausen
Lucern
Several locations arround the Bodensee
Lugano
Locarno
Gruyeres
Fribourg
Neuchatel
Murten
And a whole lot of other places I've forgotten

I just happen to like Wengen as an area, which is why I've been back so many times Razz
