I'm thinking Flaine - is that closest?

Gerardmer in the Vosges mountains... but if you're talking about the alps then Flaine is certainly one of the nearest and fastest to get to.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

La Clusaz? Although for one hour extra you could chose any number of resorts in Savoie and Switzerland

MattyNeth, How much time have you got ? Pretty much anywhere in the French alps wil be 8-10 hours.

Hi - thanks for the replies.
Gerardmer looks like it fits the bill. I wouldn't have much time and want to keep fuel costs to the absolute bare minimum . ViaMichelin looks like Gerardmer is about 6 hours from Calais - it's obviously not as high as the alps, but is the snow there any good?

MattyNeth, when it's good, it's good, but there is quite often little or none (as in the case of the Jura resorts). You could not afford to decide to go there till very late in the day, when reliable snow/weather forecasts are available. When are you thinking of going and what kind of skiing are you looking for? If you get a cheap last minute package deal it could well be cheaper than driving, unless you've got four in the car.
