Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Phew, a schlep across Paris - thankfully made easier by a couple of Boarders I met on the Eurostar who are heading to Mottaret (spelling?) to catch up with a seasonaire'ing friend of theirs - and I've made it to the right seat in time. Woohoo! Skiing in 12 hours Smile Smile Smile
The carriage is quite full and I'm surrounded by a bunch of men who look set for a night of snorring - well, they've got the right equipment; let's put it that way Sad
Yipee! We're moving.
I"m not settling here too much though. I'm hopefull one of the boarders will alert me to an available couchette Wink

Oh my gosh, what a day Smile !
I was escorted to the apartment from the coach by JohnnyBoy and his friend, Ben - breakfast in hand.
Forget breakfast! Well, I did. A quick change and we were on the slopes soon after 10am (damn coach was late leaving Moutiers!).
A drop down to deux lacs lift and conditions could not be better! Beautifully pisted runs with a hint of fresh on top. All squeaking happily underfoot. That about sums up the conditions across the whole of VT.
I have to confess that we stopped a little early to take advantage of a 3hour "happy hour" at the Viking Bar near to the Frog & Roast Beef.
Pool has taken over from skiing in a clash of the titans between JB & Ben (currently squabbling over some shot or other). Meanwhile, I am almost "on my back" due to trying to keep up on the 4th pint of beer.
Hhhhhheeeeeeeellllllllppppppp!

FenlandSkier, Blush... There I went, again.

Right, Day 2 and the snow is falling thick and fast. It started around 7am and there's over 5cm on the balcony ballastrade already! Smile
Luckily some new eyewear, purchased last night, is ready to help me do battle on the slopes. While at the MSB, vetski introduced me to the Adidas Elevation glasses which can adapt to any face shape by way of an adjustable nose doodah and vertically adjustable arms - oh, and they also transform into goggles, really retro looking goggles. They're wicked!
So JohnnyBoy is saying goodbye to Ben this morning and we plan to spend the day off-piste'ing on-piste. Visability isn't too bad in town but I think some cruisey blues might be the order of the day.
By the way, according to JohnnyBoy the snow falling is the best and most proper all season Smile. Cooool.

It's dumping so fantastically. Unfortunately the goggles adaption seem only to work in cloud not precipitation so I'm back to my crappy goggles.
Have just skiied from Duex Lac lift to Peclet gondola and stopped 10 times.
JB is here now - delivered old goggles - phew and we're going to do Lacv Blanc: Tete Rond and Christine are shut, we suppose due to Avalanch risk. Though there is conflicting info in gondola so might get to do Tete Rond.
I hear the coffee calling.

Aaaaahhhh, coffee. Blimey, we did have to take lac Blanc and it was extremely crowded. My visability was heaps better with 'proper' goggles but THE visability was pretty poor. Maybe it's the altitude, maybe it's my general fitness or maybe it's because these conditions sort the men from the boys but I'm knackered! 5 turns, rest, 5 turns, rest, and on. Jolly hard work.

:)There's so much snow everywhere Smile

flowa, The 360 web cam looks a bit murky but I would swap places if I could. Are you staying on after Easter for the Eosb or are you returning to UK? I'm rather impressed with your international train setting lifestyle, I quite fancy giving it ago next season, will I need to invest in a Strawberry, I mean Blackberry, as life looks like more fun with one in hand. After coffee we dropped down to Duex Lac lift and traversed to Moraine Lift which had reopened. Moraine was much nicer than Lac Blanc but still knackering so we scooted back to the apartment for a spot of lunch. The snow is sublime but the visability, wind and driving snow does make for tricky skiing. We're going to take the afternoon slowly, skiing a run, having a drink (ooh, now there's an idea - maybe I'd relax more if I had a beer?) And then skiing another run, of course that does make it sound pretty flowing but the truth is that each run will be very slow going with the now increased rate to 10 turns, rest, 10 turns, rest routine governing things.
Can't wait for visability to clear tomorrow morning for a short while to go and have a propper play off piste Smile.
There's so much snow already here and the forecast is for another 40cm between now and 7pm. Woohoo!

Success! And before any beer was consumed too! We planned to take Boismint after lunch and drop down to 1800 to see how extensive this snow dump is. It's like being in a snow monsoon! Neat Smile
Well Boismint was shut so we schluffed it up Moutiers and past the top of Duex Lac, where it was blowing a hoolie to go and see what Portette and Moraine were like. ... Shut. Visability was so poor we guessed that Funitel Peclet would be closed but decided to head for Cascades. Hooray - it was open and after a mildly frustrating day I finally had a breakthrough with my off-piste technique and skiied to the first bar to celebrate - well, I am a snowHead! Hehehe
It felt really good to make the progrssion from feeling "out of control" this morning to feeling "in control" this afternoon. Mind you, feeling "in control" also feels like I look like a seven year old kid with my ass dragging on the backs of my skis but, for now, it will have to do. The next few days feel a lot less daunting with this technique in my tool kit Smile Smile
We hoped to get one more run in after my beer and Johnnyboy's coffee but on our way down we saw the lift shut and the centre was already like a ghost town as we got there around 4.30pm. Only thing to do was call it a day. What a day Smile

Day 3 and there just aren't enough superlatives to describe conditions this morning. Blue skies, 0 wind, uncrowded pistes and no queues! It really doesn't get any better than this.
We started by dropping down to deux Lac again as Plein Sud was not open and scooted around to 3Valleys1 to get to the top of Plein Sud in the hope of getting over to Courcheval. Unfortunately there is no access at the moment and we have had a chorus of Avalanche blasts all morning to accompany us all over Val T. We off-pisted the back of PS and ducked around the back past L'Oxalys down to Boismint to fullfil our ambition from yesterday of dropping down to 1800 on Blanchot. Wow! What fun! We've stopped for a rest just below Plan de L'eau and the cloud has begun to make its presence felt. Temps are dropping too.
Sunnies have been superb all moring with their Sunny lenses in but it might be time to change to Flat light before setting off. What fun, I do love a new toy! Smile
Ooh, time to put the gloves on and get going Smile Smile Smile

Last run of the day looms from the bar at the top of Plain Sud. It's been a variable day. After our break this morning we went down to Les Mens in the hope of getting over to Mottaret but no luck. So we boshed up the triple to drop down to the button/poma to head back to VT. It was very crowded in Les Mens whereas we've been able to avoid queues in VT. A quick bite of lunch at the apartment and back down to Deux Lac thinking we'd have a look at Moraine and Portette but a last minute change of mind took us down to Caron, as we saw it running. Sadly the Cime Caron was not so we opted for Moutiers to access Funitel Grand Fond and took Niverolles onto Fond and returned to town to take 3V1 to our current resting spot.
Coming up Moutiers the whole of the bank which is usually a narrowish black mogul field was tracked out - like I've never seen before - not a mm of powder was untouched from extreme left to right. I'm sure that Admin would have been responsible for 75% had he been here! Smile
On piste things are pretty groomed and it is already hard packed in the lower part of town but still ab fab.
JB is heading for a bar showing some soccer game, so I'm foot loose and fancy free for a few hours. Any suggestions?

Right, that was delicious but on with the show.
We met the boarders I'd met on the way out, TopBeefChief and Steve at the top of Pas du Lac and we all headed down Cruez into Courcheval. Without a piste map I can't tell you where we got to but we managed to meet up with Waiter and Kate who are doing a season in Mottaret after making fools of ouselves playing off-piste (well one of us, anyway) and we all pootled back to Mottaret for lunch, and here we are. Smile
Snow on piste is sublime today. The run from the top of the triple gondola out of VT, I think it's called Mont de la Chambre, was phenominal. So soft, so beautifully groomed. Lovely.
Across Courcheval there is tons of fun but a little ice peaking through in spots. Nothing too bad at all.
Crumbs, it's time to think about what we can do before it's time to head back.

flowa, Sounds like you are having a great time. As you can tell not many about here this weekend. We have had snow as well and I've been out playing in it but now it's all gone. Sad Have you been over as far as 1650 or are you more at home in 1850, just don't drink the wine at 1850 before checking the price or you may be wash dishes for some time. Laughing I'm hankering to get back to the three valleys as it's the scene of one of greatest failures, I was in 1650 in 2004 and just couldn't get my ski legs together so I hope to return and slay a few ghosts sometime. We're back now. Split from the others after lunch and headed back to VT via Mont de la Chambre (I meant Lac de la Chambre about the first run we did this morning, by the way).

Ok all you L'Oxalys fans, I have some bad news. They haven't rebuilt the pool area. It is exactly the same as it was last April (though there might be new tiles on the floor but I couldn't say). They have built a new Spa. This is a classic case of lost-in-translation. French say 'new spa', English hear 'new pool'; French mean 'new area for spa treatments, by appointment at Reception'.

Sorry campers but the facilities are still ace, aren't they Smile

Well indeed, Fenlandskier, especially if certain people insist on bulking themselves out in places! Wink
Yeah, it's terrible here. Hating every minute. Wish I was back in London. ah, Not!

Day 5 dawned with clear skies and a plan to meet up with littleblue and do some practice off-piste. JohnnyBoy and I warmed up on Tete Rond and then Genepi to kill time til the appointed hour. All fabulous. Moraine was very crowded but we had Genepi to ourselves. Cool
Off-piste from these runs was strangely uninviting due to massive 'waves' in the powder formed I presume from a mixture of compression and wind. So we resisted the temptation to try anything until we met up with littleblue, who helpfully owns a shovel!

Due hour arrived and we set off for Portette lift, thankfully the queue had lessened dramatically from what we'd seen just an hour earlier. At the top we dived into the powder just below the lift. Still thigh deep and reasonably 'moveable' if a little lacking in steep.
Then a qick bosh across piste to the left (right from the lift) and into the steep and deep which was remarkably untracked. Well, suffice it to say that now we've muzzed it all no-one will want to bother! Sorry everybody. And back the frustration comes! grrrr. littleblue surfed it happily on her board while JohnnyBoy and I took it in turns to try and turn and fall and spend 5 mins or more digging ouselves out. We all eventually made it back to the piste but very knackered!

Then while skiing on piste I dug into an unseen bump and re-pulled a tendon in my right ankle'ish but higher area that's been playing up all trip for no obvious reason (along with my right gacstronimus!) and I had to ski down to the K&F to recover over a long lunch which I'm enjoying while writing this.

The others have gone to make the most of the day but I feel bound to retire Sad as the pain is pretty bad and I had to ski the rest of the piste one-legged so my left leg isn't very happy.

We are hoping to meet up with TopBeefChief, Steve, Waiter and Kate again tomorrow so I think a sacrificial afternoon is justified.

Ttfn, as JohnnyBoy would say

Hoppo, yes, it was excellent Smile.

Well the forecast for o'night snow is approx. 17cm! Woohoo! Sadly, visability is set to be poor all day so it's going to be a restful bunch of flattish Blues for me. The flat light and bumps on reds just do my leg in and I do NOT want to risk missing the EoSB! Tonight, after a long shower and a longer afternoon nap, my leg feels heaps better - far better then the pain I was in earlier suggested I would be feeling. Phew. Smile

I got back to the apartment, anticipating having it to myself for a few hours, to find JohnnyBoy tucked up on the sofa writing a mammoth post for his seasonnaireing blog with Series 1 Prison Break on't telly. Easy to sleep through, no worries Wink

He and littleblue had done a couple more runs around Moraine but couldn't get much fun out of the appaling vis so chucked it in.

Last night Sad. He's said no to the most expensive restaurant in town so we're just off to the Poilotte for a thank-you dinner instead.

Ok, time for a night-time resort review; limited though it is.

Dinner was predictably excellent at the Paillote (or however you spell it). We then thought we'd take the easy option and pop into Eclipse Bar as it's in the same complex and has a pool table. I'm relieved to say that after being beaten by JohnnyBoy & Ben ealier in the holiday I managed to go 3-1 up tonight. Must be the wine Smile.
Unfortunately that bar has turned pretty hetero-hostile (speaking as a former fag-hag, I feel somewhat qualified to cast an opinion). So enough was enough and we hiked up to the top of town to the now very reliable Viking Bar. A place not afraid of non top-40 and growing more and more progressive. Toniight we are being treated to a real DJ with live rappers called Gooseneck Steppers Crew who are currently raising the roof. Cool

That about sums it up. It's just that compared to Tignes the music in this resort is pretty poor on the whole so it's very pleasing to find a retreat from the mundane at The Vikng Smile. Smile

Day 6 Smile. Last day Sad. It snowed all night Smile. The wind blew all night Sad. It's bright Smile. Oh; no it's cloudy Sad.
A little late to get up this am. Might possibly have something to do with the very late and leary one last night. Just possibly.

Cruisey day today. Time to find where all the snow drifted to o'night. There's tons of it everywhere around the apartment, even in the atrium hallway of the building! However, looking across to the pistes above the Cascades and Peclet lifts not much of it has landed softly so I suspect off-piste might be breakable crust today (but what do I know?) - at any rate, well beyond my abilities with a hangover and all.

Cheers Headplant but I don't think they'll buy it Sad. No worries, I'm happy in the knowledge that I'll be back in a few weeks Smile Smile

We found the Peclet gondolas closed due to a tech issue so went down to Caron and skied the blue to test the legs. Just the run to Caron itself was testing as every undulation strains my right leg Sad. But the cloud has gone! It's sublime out here so we soldiered on down to Plan de L'eau to rest at the Cafe just down from the top of the lift in the sun. The views are spectacluar from the Masse on the right up to Caron in front and to VT on the left.

It turns out I was right about the breakable crust. Coming up the lift we saw one lonely set of off-piste tracks under the lift. There is no movement in the snow at all. Each turn looks like a knife slicing through icing - very sharp! The wind-drift has made the most amazing sets of miny waves in the snow and in parts it looks like flaky slate! Extraodinary.

It's going to be a gentle, short day skiing virtually one-legged. As soon as the cloud rolls in again, that'll be it. No complaints Smile it's superb out here. Things could be much, much worse.

flowa, Sorry to here about the leg still playing up. Confused I've had some experience of wind blown crust, I took a fall on some not realising there was ice below the surface, I was black from my right palm to my ankle. Shocked It took six to eight weeks to get rid if the bruising. Shock I now pay attention to the locals, if they don't ski on it there must be a reason.

Did you take any photos of the drifting? It would be interesting to see the condition away from the web cam areas, the web cams are all I live for at the moment. Embarassed As you are doing the one legged thing you may be interested to in the turning on one ski thread. Laughing

Have a gentle afternoon and enjoy that last bit.
