Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Private powder lessons in Whistler - any suggestons?

 Poster: A snowHead

Travelling on the 22nd March.
Looks like plenty of powder due high up so this is my opportunity to learn how to ski powder properly. I am a powder novice but good on piste.

Any suggestions for good tutors, don't want a whole course, just half a day maybe.

Should I book in advance?

Matthew Way, Have a look at this http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/rentals/school/ski/index.htm i did supergroups last year, if your lucky you could end up skiing one to one depending the ratio instructors / clients.

Definatley recommended, and they ask you what YOU want to do so there should be no problems requesting to ski pow, weather permitting! ( i've no doubts looking at the forecast).

Enjoy snowHead

Forgive me if you know this already, but there is no (legitimate) ski tuition on Whistler-Blackcomb that is not booked through the official ski school. One entity owns (or leases, not sure which) the whole ski area on both mountains so the lifts. the ski school and all of the restaurants etc are owned and run by them. There are no private operators offering "independent" tuition , at least officially.

If any of the ski school staff get caught doing "homers" on their day off, it is instant dismissal (or so I was toldby one of them.)

Within those limitations the Supergroups on Blackcomb are your best bet. I did one in January. We were the standard ratio of 1 to 3 but it worked well as we were broadly of a similar standard, each having differing strengths and weaknesses in differing conditions. We certainly got a lot of skiing done.

I booked a day or so in advance (whilst in the resort) and there was no problem doing that. It wasnt a weekend though. Weekends are busier generally and sometimes people sign up for ski school for the tuition and the facility to cut the lift line via the ski school entrance

Another vote for Supergroups here wink

Be sure to tell your instructor that you want to focus on powder (conditions permitting).

Thanks all, super groups it is.
Looks like plenty of powder on its way to practice in!

BTW is there still plenty of good skiing there even if the vis is poor?

Matthew Way, looks like you've already been sold, but I thought I'd add my vote to Supergroups too. I did two last week - the one on Friday was 2 to 1 and we were very similar standards, and the one on Saturday was 1 to 1 so the instructor was also able to film me. I was very happy with both instructors as they both had a different emphasis. They also seem prepared to concentrate on whatever the client requests, so if you ask for powder, you should get it (conditions permitting).

veeeight, I had Kirsten on one day and Ryochi (sp) (other instructors seemed to call him Yoyo) the other day. Thought about mentioning you to them, but realised that you might not actually be called veeeight Smile Incidentally, though, thanks for all your posts over the last few years. They were very useful when I was searching the forums to research the trip.

veeeight, should I book for Easter Monday in advance or wait until the day before?

The forecast is for plenty and much lower temps for the last week of March, so should be ideal conditions.

jcbaragorn, ah yes, the Vulcan and YoYo wink Glad you had a good time with them.

Matthew Way, mostly we can accomodate large numbers, but Easter this year is projected to be v busy, so the sooner you book, the better. Be sure to say hi, I've got a white helmet on my melon.

Sounds a bit painful, not sure I'll be looking closely at random peoples melons. (Unless they are attractive, female and large!!!) Razz

malcolm1, You are entirely right, but a client can of course book a private lesson with a named instructor if they have a particular recommendation.

I too vote for super groups though, and in my humble opinion, you should do the low end lessons in the super groups on Whistler, and then progress to intermediate and advanced super groups on Blackcomb with veeeight
