Poster: A snowHead
|
Thanks to those who helped with queries about transfering at Paris - have printed all the ideas off..
Still trying to book rail tickets to Bourg St Maurice...
Got the journey out sorted.
On the way back I need to change at Chambery.
Have been offered
Bourg to Chambery 8.10 arr 9.50
Chambery to Paris Lyon 10.25 to 13.23
then eurostar...
isnt this cutting it a bit fine to change at Chambery? What if I miss the connection - are there loads of trains (probably on a Monday)
Sorry for such a boring topic

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Jayne: we have have done this transfer - nah that's plenty of time. you'll either be on the same platform, or one over - and the signs will be all wrong.... And some of the pre-booked seating may show you in carriages that don't exist...
But seriously, it really is a small station, and even if it was 10 minutes I wouldn't be stressed - 35 and you'll be able to wander around town! There were at least 3 Paris trains showing during our 20 min wait last year (a Wednesday) , so even if you get the wrong one, you'll be fine.

Why on earth do you need to change at Chambery and why are you returning in the morning? Surely the point of rail travel to and from Bourg by train is to ski all day and then sleep in a couchette going home. Similarly to sleep on the way out (as I used to do, going skiing with my parents long ago) and wake just in time to change for the opening of the lifts. There seems no advantage to rail otherwise (after all it is more expensive now we have cheap flights).

Thanks Jim
I just hate doing things for the first time! Its helpful to know its a small station and that there will be other trains if for some reason the train from Bourg is delayed.
I'm sure once I've done the train a few times it will feel fine... At the moment it just seems so flippin complicated compared to flying!
But think how eco friendly I'm going to feel..

You'll need to Register first of course.

snowball it looks really clever. Just tried it but think I must have done something wrong coz it only gave two possibilities - neither of them the ones I have been offered...
Must need to make the parameters different.
Will have another go.
Thanks
ps - some of the websites I've been on are such rubbish - Eurostar is pretty bad! Canterbury rail (recommended by Rob) are being really helpful.
think I'm nearly sorted.

jayne durham, The station's very small 4 platforms, 5 tracks (I think, might be 5/6) with a steps and an underpass between them. 5 min. is all you need and there are monitors hanging above each platform that tell you the train, the time and the platform for your connection. I had a change there in Nov. and ALL (except an ancient and remarkably stinky loo) the station facilities were closed for refurbishment

Masque it sounds lovely!! (not). Sounds like I've got more of a problem on the way out when I have about an hour to kill at the station.
Might start a thread on how to pass the time!!
Booked it all up today. Will be interesting to see how rail travel work.
Thanks to all

jayne durham, there is a bar and a small cafe there, also a newspaper/magazine/books stall. You must make sure you validate your ticket before you board the train.

David@traxvax, It was ALL closed and covered in brick dust in November . . . the bar over the road was open though and as she's posted she's changing trains she doesn't need to validate anything. Keep up man.
