Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off piste courses in Cervinia

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

I am going to Cervinia next week. My friend and I are now good skiers and have decided we want to learn some off piste skiing. Inghams run a 3 day piste to powder course that culminates in a full days off piste excursion to Zermatt. That sounds perfect, but I am booked with crystal:(

Are there courses run by the the local ski schools that are similar? I have seen that the heliski cervinia run off piste excursions to zermatt, but I cant see any off piste lesson courses offered. I am possibly thinking of getting a private lesson and then doing the excursion to Zermatt. Will I be up to the required standard after that? I emailed the ski schools in Cervinia but non got back to me.

Thanks

Rick

Agent57, welcome to Snowheads! snowHead

I've never skied in Cervinia, and am only just getting to grips with off-piste myself. I'm a bit surprised none of the ski schools got back to you - can Crystal help? You could also investigate the Cervinia website/contact the tourist office to see if you can find some independent mountain guides. While not able to comment on standards, I'd suggest that you not do the excursion to Zermatt without a guide - there will probably be different trails of different difficulty, and you won't know if something's too tough until you're stuck!

Try going into Forum Search - top of the page, left hand side - and entering different combinations of terms e.g. "Cervinia off piste" or "Cervinia mountain guide" I reckon you have a good chance of finding something helpful.

In fact, just found this on the Cervinia website - ALPINE GUIDES SOCIETY OF CERVINIA, +39.0166.94.81.69, info@guidedelcervino.com

Agent57, lots of odd (in a good way) features around here - when you reply to someone, after you've made sure the cursor is in the Quick Reply box you can just click on their name on the left - that's why yours comes up in bold on my posts. You've clearly already figured out emoticons! There's a big thread in "The Piste" about avalanche gear - you might find it interesting to read given your plans.

It all depends on the standard of the group but you don't learn how to ski off piste in a day so I think you should just join people with the same amount of experience. Join a ski school off piste class (private lessons are extremely expensive on your own). In places like Val d'Isere there are several independent guides/ski schools which specialise in off piste, but I don't know about Cervinia.
In my experience Cervinia isn't very good for off piste - though I expect there is enough for a beginner so long as there has been recent snow. Old snow off piste is generally very difficult - assuming there is any that isn't tracked out.
