Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skis Too Short

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Son went to his lesson yesterday and afterward his instructor said that his skis were too short. I was just wondering what the consequences of skiing on short skis were? I know that if they are too long kids sometimes get in the backseat. Puzzled
His skis are not quite chin height, they just reach the base of his neck. Hubby is off to the states on business so he's going to see if he can get them cheaper over there.

The instructor seems to know his stuff, does well with the race team, is a beautiful skier himself, comes from a family of ski instructors etc, etc..... but my son used to have trouble getting out of the backseat and Easiski recommended he be kept on shorter skis, so you see my quandry Confused

If he continues to ski short skis he may turn out gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Oh and his mates will laugh at him.

ickabodblue, shouldn't cause a problem IMHO. How heavy built is he? Ski length not to do with height but with weight...

ickabodblue, Skiing is a practical skill, not an academic exercise. Try some longer skis if they do the trick then stick with them. Instructors will try shorter skis or even blades on persistent back seat drivers but when the posture is corrected they usually go back to a more appropriate length.
Talk to the instructor and ask him why he thinks longer skis will help.

ickabodblue, I'm 5'7(and a shrinking bit), 95Kg and my favourite skis are my 160 Atomic SX10s, I learned to carve properly on them, without them I would not have been able to start race training (barely pubescent-like) on some 175 Fischers and then to near wet m'sen with fun on some 182 SX12s.

It's not length, it's technique that's important and it's easier to get that right on shorter skis. The fixation on length really is just that . . . a personal preference fixation and little to do with skiing skill until he starts getting into VERY specific sport discipline training.

jbob, Posture has now mostly been corrected (only a problem when he is bricking it, but, hey that happens to most folk). He has recently started making really good progress and I don't want to hold him back. So I think I will take a trip to xscape and hire some longer skis and see how he gets on.

Masque, Of course you are right. I shouldn't get fixated at this stage - or any stage. It is just that he is just beginning the kids race training and I am your architypal over anxious mother. I try not to be, honest
