If he continues to ski short skis he may turn out gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Oh and his mates will laugh at him.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

ickabodblue, shouldn't cause a problem IMHO. How heavy built is he? Ski length not to do with height but with weight...

ickabodblue, Skiing is a practical skill, not an academic exercise. Try some longer skis if they do the trick then stick with them. Instructors will try shorter skis or even blades on persistent back seat drivers but when the posture is corrected they usually go back to a more appropriate length.
Talk to the instructor and ask him why he thinks longer skis will help.

ickabodblue, I'm 5'7(and a shrinking bit), 95Kg and my favourite skis are my 160 Atomic SX10s, I learned to carve properly on them, without them I would not have been able to start race training (barely pubescent-like) on some 175 Fischers and then to near wet m'sen with fun on some 182 SX12s.
It's not length, it's technique that's important and it's easier to get that right on shorter skis. The fixation on length really is just that . . . a personal preference fixation and little to do with skiing skill until he starts getting into VERY specific sport discipline training.

Better too short than too long.

jbob, Posture has now mostly been corrected (only a problem when he is bricking it, but, hey that happens to most folk). He has recently started making really good progress and I don't want to hold him back. So I think I will take a trip to xscape and hire some longer skis and see how he gets on.
Masque, Of course you are right. I shouldn't get fixated at this stage - or any stage. It is just that he is just beginning the kids race training and I am your architypal over anxious mother. I try not to be, honest
