Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long weekend near Zurich - which resort?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Thanks mainly to the wise words of Carled in the Weather Outlook Thread my fingers have just accidently slipped onto the "book" button of a flight to Zurich for a long weekend 7-11 March. Ooops. Blush

Next - where to go. I will be meeting up with mates driving down from Germany so a car is available. 3 powder hungry snowboarders looking for empty slopes, fresh tracks and steep+deep. If the hoped-for megadumporama occurs which of the following will be best?

Andermatt

Davos

Engelberg

Lenzerheide

Somewhere else

Within the 4 days available to us we are keen to do some proper off-piste with a guide in addition to as much easily accessible powder as possible.

hd, I can speak with some authority having been to none of those places rolling eyes but I understand Engelberg has the reputation for great off-piste. A short trip from Zurich too

kitenski, Laax faces south doesn't it? Therefore not good for pow especially in any March sunshine?

jedster, Engelberg does look good however the lack of crowds thing is important to us since we really do want as much fresh-trackage as possible. I hate crowds. Sad

Will it be busy on Monday and Tuesday or only at the weekend? Sat/Sun might be good days to hire a guide for the Laub.

Ordhan, I really really want to go to Ischgl and had also considered St Anton, but isn't it difficult to find accommodation in either of those resorts for less than a week?

Engelberg is busy on Saturday bit less on Sunday and quite quiet on Monday/Tuesday.
It's goof for off piste but hasn't snowed there for 2 weeks. Having said that you can find some good places. In fact most of the Alps doesn't have fresh pow at the moment,

Davos good too but more expensive and doesn't seem like it has much apres.

GordonFreeman, cheers that's what I like to hear. May I ask how it is you know this stuff? wink

Snow conditions now obviously aren't good for a powderhound but the flights have been booked based on speculation that megadumporama may commence towards the end of the month. (see the weather outlook thread)

HD you just have to do the donkey work for the Iscghel resorts hit the web and the phone and you will find somwhere it is no where near as bad as people make it out. To be honest if it is for a short stop Andermatt is probably the better as Iscghel is a place best left to when you have a week to explore. St Anton is a gift from god to skiers Little Angel

hd, er Laax has a load of specialist freeride (read off-piste) areas which are avy controlled. Wouldn't have thought they'd do that if March was going to be a regular wash-out for powder rolling eyes The main pistes may be mostly (but not exclusively) south-facing, but if you are into touring, you can go off the back of the ridge at the top and head north towards Elm. Besides you're talking about early March which is usually one of the best periods of the season IME, and the snow reports threads reckon there could be a dump of snow due towards the end of next week, into the following one. If they're right, then I wouldn't think you'll have a problem with pow anywhere and don't forget Laax is the second largest linked resort in Switzerland, so there's probably more choice than many other places. One of the local guide cos is sure to be able to find some stashes. If you haven't totally written off Laax, our place is free for that weekend, I believe

Lech or St Anton. Take the Alberg Express from Zurich Airport (Frid/Sat/Sun only though) €75 return and takes 2.5-3 hours.

Wouldn't much bother with Engelberg. It takes about 90 mins to get from the bottom to the top.

I'd check out Lenzerheide or Arosa or Laax if I were in your shoes.

If I were in my shoes I'd go to Andermatt, but definately not Engelberg.

There's a thread on here somewhere from last (?) season by Arno about an off piste trip to Engleberg IIRC.
