So I've had my weeks skiing. I discussed with my friends should I get them waxed here in the UK before taking them to VT. They advised perhaps waiting until I got there and then asking the local shop (I assume there will be one) to do them for me - the basis for this being that the shop will be familiar with the local 'spring' snow conditions and will therefore be able to wax them with the most suitable wax for the local conditions.
I'm no expert, but the concept makes sense to me. Is this good advice?

Megamum, they will probably just wax them with the same stuff they use all season for everyone's skis regardless. They will, however, be cheaper than shops in the UK.
On the other hand, you've just bought them, and shops often include first service for free (just had mine waxed/edged on this basis, member of staff then cut his finger on one of the edges ) - I should ask them about it if I were you.

Lizzard, Megamum, took advantage of the special snowHead deal on Elan Skis, so they were straight from Admin.
Megamum, Stick them in to a shop in resort, but shops will normally only use the machine applied hot wax on a roller, if you want a hand job, specific to the conditions, it will cost a lot more.

Megamum, Just get a "Fartage Rapide" then

Megamum, I pay 20€ for full service and 5€ for wax - these are seasonnaire rates, but the discount we get is usually about 10% to 20%.

I could be wrong but in my experience the wax job in the mountain shops is just a surface coating, they don't melt anything into the base and any dry bits still look dry after?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Spyderman, hoy much do you think megamum should be willing to pay for "a hand job, specific to the conditions, "
I am sure SZK will quote...

Oooo......you lot.....don't miss a trick do you all!! I ought to send you to the nearest sink to wash out your mouths with soap, but that would only lead to comments such as 'where's the soap?' etc.
