Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pas de la Casa

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Did anyone read the article in yesterday's Telegraph (travel section) about Pas de la Casa? Sadly I can't find it on the telegraph website, or I'd post a link to it, but the gist of it was this:

Pas is becoming known as "Ibiza on snow" due to the large numbers of p*ssed young brits who are spending their holidays there. The vodka & red bull is a 50:50 mix as the vodka is cheaper than red bull (about 2 euros a litre) & hotels are no longer offering credit due to the large numbers "doing a runner" without paying. The rep organised bar crawls were likened to those which caused so much trouble in Faliraki in the summer & alcohol related accidents are frequent.

It painted a very grim picture & certainly put me off going there. I appreciate that there are 2 sides to every story, so has anyone experienced a different side to Pas?

There was a pub crawl or two there 2 weeks ago when I was there but it was well-ish managed - I wasn't on it myself.

I find that skiers don't normally do the 3am singing outside the pub thing because it's too cold and they want to get up the next morning to ski.

It's normally just the beginners and they only do it the once because they end up missing a day and regreting it.

I was in Pas in 2001- and it is definately like Ibiza in the snow for the nightlife- but that was half the attraction for our group! We were out til all hours but still managed to get up the next morning. Its definately an acquired taste and is nothing like the french resorts ive stayed in, but the skiing is good, the people are great and not in any way pretentious and its dirt cheap- so my advice is to give it a whirl! you'll have a great time if you get in the swing of things!

Went to Pas for first skiing experience and loved it!! I took my 3 kids (8, 6 and 4) with my wife and a couple of other families. We had a great time. As far as the nightlife went, it helped that we were a bit up the slope (Hotel Phoebus - not great, but ski-in ski-out, so that was cool). I reckon we missed most of the beery nonsense because of that.

The tuition was fabulous, and I found the slopes to be really accessible, with a smooth transition from beginners to easy blues then on to manageable reds. All this just to say that there are ways to do Pas the non-Ibiza way.

just had a look- and i do know where the street is. Its on a main street in the centre of pas, but to theres no pubs or clubs on the street so its pretty quiet at night, bout 5mins walk down a gentle slope to the lifts, 25 min moan back up the hill!!

Really central, but away from the hb of bars and clubs, takes like 5 mins to walk to them though- make sure you go to Underground and KYU, the guy who owns Underground is a legend - Michel, and the guys behind the bar are mental! KYU is bigger, and more cheesy mini club!

make sure you get the Gran Valira ski pass so you can ski soldeu as well, and im sure you;ve been - but go to Caldea Spa for the day - pure bliss!

Dontchajusluv the Telegraph, on the ball as ever. Pas has been like Ibiza on snow since before Ibiza. That is pretty much since the first tour bus arrived. What do you expect with duty free alcohol. Skiing is strictly optional for some visitors. Go to Soldeu if you want a slightly more upmarket clientelle.

Get yourselves to Baqueira where I'll be in February!!!! Talk about making it difficult to book though! They have a central agency who tell you there is nothing available and then you contact the hotel directly and all is fine. No wonder only one UK company goes there. Great snow at the moment so the signs are good. snowHead

i've been to pas de la casa for the last 2 years. Ibiza on snow no way. It may be slightly louder with more young people than other ski resports but nothing like ibiza etc. At the end of the day people are there to ski. The first year i was there a group of irish guys were on a lads holiday and the local police kept a very obvious eye on them which kept them under control and i would even say they were a problem. Would highly recomend the resort and wouldn't let mindless stories which are only there to fill papers and tv listings put people off.

Sorry for the rant

Well e30m3, maybe Pas has improved since we were there.

When we were there we were woken up every single night by people having parties in other apartments, fire extingushers were set off all over every the common areas in the apartments at 4 in the morning, the buzzer to our apartment was rang regularly throughout the night, and the nightlife was very tacky. Party games such as "Bounce for the Boys" (yes you've guessed it .. as many drunken girls as possible, remove their bra's and jump up and down on the stage for the chanting boys) as well as plenty of other trashy games were so pathetic that we actually left a free bar behind Shock

On the upside Smile , we had plenty of snow. And as second year skiiers, there were plenty of wide easy runs to keep us going. The food, drink and ski equipment was cheap. So perhaps staying out of town is an option ..

I have skied Pas a couple of times and it was great fun, I have to say now that it is linked with Soldeu I would probaly go there and give the OTT nightlife a miss in Pas. The problem the 2nd time we went was French teenagers doing there best to prove they could get as drunk as the brits! Apparently several were escorted back to France; all 250 Meters wink

Yeah, agree. See my post above - if you stay on a hotel up the hill (Carrer de la Solana) you'll miss most (if not all) of the beery Ibiza-type scenes. We're going back this year - this time to the Himalaia which should fit the bill. Apparently it has a very nice bar with cosy, relaxing sofas, as well as a pool/sauna, and right on the slopes (virtually ski-in/ski-out). That, coupled with the complete lack of skier pretensiousness (not Alps, you see) should make for a good holiday.

It's new since last year, so not sure exactly where it is (I'll do a little googling and find out). What I can say is we stayed in the Hotel Magic in Andorra La Vella last February - drove out to join our friends in Pal every day, which was actually OK. The Magic in ALV was nice - good accommodation, nice (though buffet) meals. Generally good quality. I expect the Magic Pas will be similar. The Magic hotels are sister hotels in the same group as the Himalaia Hotels (Pas and I think Soldeu), which is where we're going in Pas this year, and we're expecting it to be nice.

Hmmm, looks quite central.... but you may be OK in the Magic anyway, as the prices might put off the rowdy end of the market.

Here's a useful link, anyways:

Don't let the 'ibiza' comparison put you off, its fantastic value for money, great skiing and you can take or leave the nightlife. We have never had any trouble the atomsphere is drunken but friendly and you are guaranteed to have a good time at the Underground !!

emwah, no snow at all today ! None forecast for the next three days ! Last snowed 29th December 2004. Locals reckon it wont snow until the next full moon 28 January ! Really icey conditions especially lower down. In good old SCGB style "the best conditions are on the upper slopes". snowHead

Hi, I am back after a week in Pas and what a fab week it was !! We certainly got our snow and the conditions at the end of the week were perfect, lots of snow and lots of sun !! I envy anyone on their way out there now, you just can't beat the conditions of the slopes and the number of slopes as well !!
Stayed in the Magic and the hotel itself is really well positioned and decorated really nicely too so think its a great place to stay. Breakfasts are fab but i mst agree that the evening meals aren't too wonderful, overall though good fun had by all. Just got to wait another year now till we go again Sad
