Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm betting on Canon EOS 1Ds mk II with a 70-200 f2.8 IS USM lens Smile

only 'cos it's what I'd use if I could afford it Smile

nbt, ..... if it is this camera then I will probably give it a miss ..... Toofy Grin

I have googled it and when I see the MkIII has a £500 DISCOUNT, methinks it's probably not the most ideal for skiing snaps ....

Retails at £4995.00 - I didn't dwell to find if that inlcuded the lens ... Laughing

FenlandSkier, nice one, I never thought to check the exif.

It is a 200m f2.8 lens though which makes the think that the lens is right - FYI BernardC, the camera comes body only by default I think - the lens I mentioned retails at around £1400 but it widely considered to be the best lens in production in terms of performance vs cost. It's a staple in the bags of many pro sports photographers. I've got the baby brother f4 non-IS version and the image quality is amazing compared to the cheaper lenses I've been using to date (it's also a hell of a lot loghter than the f2.8 IS version - 0.5kg vs 1.5 kg Shocked). The lens is more important than the camera though - I'd far rather have a great lens on an average camera body than a top of the range body wit a hunk of junk lens

horizon, apologies for the slight thread hijack but you we need something to distract us from the jealousy Wink

nbt, no problem!

Here's a link to the photog's website: http://neoguiri.deviantart.com/

That's what he had to say about his equipment:

"Canon 30D and 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM

30D is not the best camera for that condition of altitude and humidity but not problem at this time. Hope this will continue... Next camera will come in a near future

the lens is perfect "

(that lens is BIG! I first thought he had a professional videocamera...)

Wow. Incidentally - does anyone have any recommendations for a compact digital that takes great shots for mountain landscapes and action shots? Oh - and I'm broke so seeing as I'll be spending the banks money, I need to be modest. Am tempted by the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 but at £200 (the cheapest price I can find for it) it's at the top end of my budget and want to make sure it's the right one. Any better and possibly cheaper ones out there?

I checked the 'properties' of the photos above (Right-click mouse with pointer on photo) Details confirmed 're-sizing' so i imagined original photo info was compromised. Pray tell how you got the info .... ? (It could be worth a small beer .... )

horizon, ... sorry as well to digress your Thread ..... but with photos as deadly as that .... ! What camera did you use ... ?

I have a Sony Cyber-shot which I have had for a number of years & it's okay. I have only gotten into taking photos recently - Yodas, fault ... Toofy Grin ... normally haven't got time to stop ... Laughing ... as they add a little bit of colour to trip reports ... Very Happy

As with sallywt, ... is there any 'Digital Camera for Dummies' on the market that will take photos as good as these, on a fully automatic, 'point & shoot basis' ?

(No fiddling with buttons, filters, modes, etc, on the mountain)

Hi Bernard C - I started a thread of my very own on this topic and had some excellent recommendations - check it out in equipment reviews. After that and more forum searching I came up with the following recommendations:

Fujifilm F30
Pentax Optio A10
Sony Cybershot W50
Canon IXUS 850
Nikon P5100.
Digital_IXUS_70
Lumix TZ3
Lumix LX2
Canon Powershot G9.

After researching I wanted the G9 first then the LX2 but both out of my price range so am going to go for the TZ3 which has some hearty recommendations. I'm not expecting it to take as good a photo as one that costs several thousand though. Normally have to spend several thousand for that or be an exceptional photographer or lucky - or all three wink

Photos 3 - 6 are taken by my Olympus C-7000Z. No longer on the market. I'm happy with it, to the extent that I haven't yet found the camera to replace it (the trend towards higher megapixels and smaller sensors doesn't help).

The first two are taken by a midrange DSLR with a top-range lens - completely different thing. That said, I've seen photos from a Canon 30D which I didn't like - most likely due to the postprocessing rather than the camera itself.

In my browser (Opera) I just right click - properties and the info is displayed automagically but in IE I think you'd need to save the image first and then open it with a normal image viewer and look at the EXIF info. www.irfanview.com is great for this.
That's 2 ways to do it, does that upgrade me to a large beer Toofy Grin

Really epic pics, and it seems super fabulous snow.... Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

And last ones are a dream for much of us!! I want to be there.

Can you explain where is this itinerary??

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
JT, I managed to do a few jump turns where the first two people had side-slipped...but then there were another 3-4 yards of side-slipping, yes

Boot pack was c. 20 -30 minutes (after a 10-minute traverse). But it shouldn't have been more than c. 15 minutes - one of the people in the group didn't have a proper backpack to attach the skis to, so he carried them in his hands and stopped moving when the going got tough. (Two of us got his skis and then he went on).

AlTom, both itineraries start from the Pic Blanc (3300 m), where you can get to using the cable car. The first one (Grand Sablat) required no hiking, while for the second one (with the gully) we descended for a while on a black run, traversed for a while and climbed back up as per the photo. I can't remember what the second one was called - I was focusing on the safety info imparted by the guide in high-speed French.

The "trouble" with these routes is that, after a 2000m vertical drop you end up in a village on the other side of the mountain. From there, the only way back is a 45 min taxi ride or a 5 min helicopter ride. (Although I'm trying to convince mrs horizon to provide transportation next year). Of course, the relative difficulty of getting back means that it's all untracked!

I think the gulley looks like the Cerisier

You can actually traverse back over the Col du Sarenne or ski down to the summer road then walk/skin for 15 mins back up to the Col. This cuts out some vertical but saves some cash. And the final few 100ms of vertical is sometimes not really worth it if the snow is a bit thin lower down

No problem....It had been nice to meet up skiing or making a beer..... Maybe another time.

The trip was amazing, but after the trip I was really busy; I want to put a little TR but really not many time to do... Sad Sad The photos and vids are still waiting in the cam Shocked Shocked And now looking for next trip, and looking for people that looks for off-piste....maybe easter, maybe april I don't know....

Arno It seems like your garden......You knows all the corners of ADH??? Nice.. Shocked Shocked

ADH always was in my list, but only been there 1 day and with awful weather (cold after sunny and warmer days, so hard hard snow without visibility, so no possibilities to attemp off-piste). And it's "only" 6-7 hours by car from my home.

Had a wicked time in Alpe D this JAn (running into three storms helped, as did brand new Scot Punishers... mmmmm) and hit a variety of similar stuff by the looks of it. Best European trip by a mile, and if you like Alpe D then I'd recommend a Lake Tahoe missionas the terrain there is similar to what I've found stateside (esp Squaw)... Build it yourself and go for at least 2wks and the cost becomes reasonable too (more on lift tickets but naff all on food, you can live off Tahoe City supermarket hotwings!).

sometimes people think that if you know a lot one place can be boring....but there are places (as verbier, chamonix, LG....and maybe ADH, but I don't know) that more you know, more you love and more you enjoy
