Wow. Incidentally - does anyone have any recommendations for a compact digital that takes great shots for mountain landscapes and action shots? Oh - and I'm broke so seeing as I'll be spending the banks money, I need to be modest. Am tempted by the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 but at £200 (the cheapest price I can find for it) it's at the top end of my budget and want to make sure it's the right one. Any better and possibly cheaper ones out there?

I checked the 'properties' of the photos above (Right-click mouse with pointer on photo) Details confirmed 're-sizing' so i imagined original photo info was compromised. Pray tell how you got the info .... ? (It could be worth a small beer .... )

I have a Sony Cyber-shot which I have had for a number of years & it's okay. I have only gotten into taking photos recently - Yodas, fault ... ... normally haven't got time to stop ...  ... as they add a little bit of colour to trip reports ... 
As with sallywt, ... is there any 'Digital Camera for Dummies' on the market that will take photos as good as these, on a fully automatic, 'point & shoot basis' ?
(No fiddling with buttons, filters, modes, etc, on the mountain)

Hi Bernard C - I started a thread of my very own on this topic and had some excellent recommendations - check it out in equipment reviews. After that and more forum searching I came up with the following recommendations:
Fujifilm F30
Pentax Optio A10
Sony Cybershot W50
Canon IXUS 850
Nikon P5100.
Digital_IXUS_70
Lumix TZ3
Lumix LX2
Canon Powershot G9.
After researching I wanted the G9 first then the LX2 but both out of my price range so am going to go for the TZ3 which has some hearty recommendations. I'm not expecting it to take as good a photo as one that costs several thousand though. Normally have to spend several thousand for that or be an exceptional photographer or lucky - or all three

Photos 3 - 6 are taken by my Olympus C-7000Z. No longer on the market. I'm happy with it, to the extent that I haven't yet found the camera to replace it (the trend towards higher megapixels and smaller sensors doesn't help).
The first two are taken by a midrange DSLR with a top-range lens - completely different thing. That said, I've seen photos from a Canon 30D which I didn't like - most likely due to the postprocessing rather than the camera itself.

JT, I managed to do a few jump turns where the first two people had side-slipped...but then there were another 3-4 yards of side-slipping, yes
Boot pack was c. 20 -30 minutes (after a 10-minute traverse). But it shouldn't have been more than c. 15 minutes - one of the people in the group didn't have a proper backpack to attach the skis to, so he carried them in his hands and stopped moving when the going got tough. (Two of us got his skis and then he went on).
AlTom, both itineraries start from the Pic Blanc (3300 m), where you can get to using the cable car. The first one (Grand Sablat) required no hiking, while for the second one (with the gully) we descended for a while on a black run, traversed for a while and climbed back up as per the photo. I can't remember what the second one was called - I was focusing on the safety info imparted by the guide in high-speed French.
The "trouble" with these routes is that, after a 2000m vertical drop you end up in a village on the other side of the mountain. From there, the only way back is a 45 min taxi ride or a 5 min helicopter ride. (Although I'm trying to convince mrs horizon to provide transportation next year). Of course, the relative difficulty of getting back means that it's all untracked!

I think the gulley looks like the Cerisier
You can actually traverse back over the Col du Sarenne or ski down to the summer road then walk/skin for 15 mins back up to the Col. This cuts out some vertical but saves some cash. And the final few 100ms of vertical is sometimes not really worth it if the snow is a bit thin lower down

Had a wicked time in Alpe D this JAn (running into three storms helped, as did brand new Scot Punishers... mmmmm) and hit a variety of similar stuff by the looks of it. Best European trip by a mile, and if you like Alpe D then I'd recommend a Lake Tahoe missionas the terrain there is similar to what I've found stateside (esp Squaw)... Build it yourself and go for at least 2wks and the cost becomes reasonable too (more on lift tickets but naff all on food, you can live off Tahoe City supermarket hotwings!).

sometimes people think that if you know a lot one place can be boring....but there are places (as verbier, chamonix, LG....and maybe ADH, but I don't know) that more you know, more you love and more you enjoy
