The first rule of telemark camp...
...is, of course, that we don't talk about telemark camp.

I assume you mean telemark camp in the Kenneth Williams sense. How did it go at MK? Not that you're talking about it obviously.

Peter S, As I said above I don't disagree it looks hard, fun not so sure but it just looks like someone mincing. I just visions of the Telemarker shouting as they ski down 'does my bum look big in these salopettes'. Sorry

PhillipStanton, Get yourself to the EoSB. I'd like to think I'm not the only (me beginner) freeheeler there. It'd be nice to get a group and arrange a lesson or two out there.

PhillipStanton,
Thats is not me, I am afraid, that is a skiing buddy. I am always the camera monkey on these things.
If we could all hit the same place, I'd invite him along, but I am not a telemarker.

PhillipStanton, Yeah I'd be up for it or I'll be doing some summer trips to some glaciers. I'll be heading back to VT for opening week again in November if that works.

question for those dabbling in telemark, assuming you can ski alpine, is it completely different, or does knowing something about carving etc help you?
Do you find it more tiring or less than alpine, and lastly does it f*ck your knees up?
Cheers,
greg

Nope - not at all.
The skis work the same - edges and sidecut. Tele stance means you have to use the back (inside) ski much more than alpine - so a bit counterintuitive if you have an alpine background.
It's not as tiresome on the knees as alpine - but driving fat skis with big boots will be tiresome alipne or tele.
It is more tiring - but get's less tiring with practice.
|
|
|
|
|
|
kitenski, to add to what ski has said, most of the elements are the same - it's just you have to assemble them in a different order.
I'm finding it fascinating to be stood at the top of a steep blue run and be scared s&*tless. The experience is doing a lot for my head and a heck of a lot for my alpine technique.
One thing that people often don't realise is that you can alpine on tele kit. It's just that you need the reactions of a cat. I'm finding that if I ski alpine style on tele kit and then hit the bumps on my alpine kit then I ski the bumps much, much better.
Have a go. You have nothing to lose except your dignity

PhillipStanton, what week / weekend were you thinking.. I am considering going to meribel first or second week of the season and we could stay at mine. Meribel opens up on the 6th and i recon would be fine for green and maybe even blue runs for our more highly experienced telemarkers.
If we could tie up with the Les Arc race bash/camp talked about elsewhere that would be cool....
