Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How long should wax last?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been waxing my own skis for a couple of years now with no real problems but....
Since I've been skiing in Canada a lot this year and have found that my ski bases go grey and look dry after about half a day of skiing.

I thought it was just the very low temps but I had a half day out on them today in temps of around -10 on wax that's supposed to be good for -30 and they now look as though they've never been waxed!

We do get some amazing temperatures here....the other week we were skiing in -27 in the Coast mountains which wasn't very comfortable but the snow was amazing!

In short, I guess I'm asking:

How do I keep wax on my skis in very cold conditions so I can get a full day of super slippy skiing instead of half a day of great skiing and half a day wishing I had wax on my bases?

Are you using hot wax? if not, then start doing so.
If you are using hot wax, how are you applying it? with a proper iron or a clothes iron? maybe you aren't heating the base up enough to 'absorb' the wax. If it is too cold, you just form a layer on the outside of the base, which will scrape off easier
I don't know off hand, the actually temps, but if you are using a clothes iron, you should set it to around the 'nylon' setting, and leave it for 5 - 10 mins in order to heat up properly ( clothes iron cycle a lot where a proper waxing iron maintains an accurate temperature)
to everyone saying that the base doesn't absorb the wax I know, it is making it easier to understand, the base does need to be heated up, in order to get the best wax protection.
Not sure where you are, but you mention coastal mountains, I am in Whistler, and use (mostly) Swix F4 low flouro wax, it is a universal wax, and works well. I only wax once a week, and I ski at least 5 days a week.

In a previous thread, I asked similar lines and 5 days is the correct time.
Silk setting which is the lowest I believe I used before buyin a TOKO iron. What a look I got in Curry's by the sale assistant asking for a bog standard iron, with that whooo a man ironing.... yeah luv it's for ski waxing till i get a proper one. Toofy Grin

Though I do iron, use a washing machine and fluent in the operation of a Twin Tub while being under the age of 40.

I admit it...I've been using a clothes iron...a lovely one with no holes in.

I think I get the base warm as I can feel the top sheet of the ski get warm through the skis...at the thin section at the ends that is.

I actually live near Williams Lake in the Cariboo area...my spell in the coast mountains was around the Smithers area..a bit further north than Whistler!

Maybe it's time to shell out on a proper waxing iron....Aaaahhh the expense!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My first was a smoothed based one. I think your getting hot enough if the top sheet feels hot. I had similar probs with TOKO universal not lasting more than 2 days. Holmenkol and Dominator are the pref'd on here, though I use ( being from england ) Data Ski from up in scotland (Graphite), TOKO universal (white) and have some Swix Cera Nova CH12 combi pack.

Wax is the bane of my life as I've just found a brand i'm happy with for the Car (Zymol Concours at £164) If it ain't ski's its the cars rolling eyes Blush

I don't use the bare hand method of application unless I do a show. I use Zymol Applicators, German Applicators for the dodo Laughing
I have also some DODO juice - Purple Haze & Orange Crush as I have 2 cars. All sat on shelf in fridge, Zymol wins hands down. Smells of Cinammon.

shoogly, innit. You put it on with bare hands! Rub fingers in tub, put into palms of hands and warm up. Apply in a north south manner on 2 ft square. Buff off instantly east west motion. Repeat 24 hour later in the same way. 24 hours later spritz with water and buff off. The water closes the pours on the carnuba and you have 2 months of shine. Did you see the dearer stuff, Vintage, Royale? I stand at vw shows with the club, so phatlass as to look her best!
