Am I right in thinking this is the first time since 1992 they've used the Face de Bellevarde for a downhill ? Graham Bell on Ski Sunday seemed to imply it had been raced on inbetween times. Bit surprised they've brought it back as I seem to remember all the racers of 92 complaining about it big time. Makes good tv though.
Miller was awesome on it in that combined run, he must fancy his chances for the world champs there.

brian, I was quite surprised by the spectacular nature of the course. I always remember Val d'Isere downhills as being won by the gliding specialists in the past.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

brian, that's right. They blew the Face run out of the rock specially for the Olympics, and havn't used it since. Now they want to use the run again for the world championships next year and they used this opportunity to do a trial run on it. I'm not sure why they have never used it again since the Olympice though

Ordhan, I think the reason stated was slightly different from what you said, I read it was too dangerous due to the advances in ski technology, but by putting extra turns in etc. they have made it OK. Not that the modern skis made it OK IYSWIM.
Doesn't mean it's not bull though! It could well be. Anyone care to shed any more light?

what they said was it's a very steep course and therefore with the acceleration offered by modern skis, it's *too* fast unless they turn it into more of a GS course than a flat out DH course - if they didn;t make the racers turn so often, half of them wouldn't finish and a fair few would end up in hospital

Actually the face de Bellevarde has been in use between 1992 an 2008 but NEVER for any EC, WC, WSC, downhill races.
The face is a difficult track because they way it moves through the landscape. as MB and DG said in their posts
Even with the current racing equipment I wonder if it wouldn't be advisable to use SuperG equipment in that track
- ps the equipment rules allowed the use of SG equipement on DH races for certain events...
I think the face is a real challenge to the motorway DH-ers like the Herminator
I haven't been in any speed events on the Face but what I know of the slope that it might be difficult to get orientation points in the landscape to direct you to the next invisible gate...
