Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

How much snow do you need?

If our resort is showing 50cm now, will this give us decent skiing over half term if they weren't to get any more and it was to stay cold?

Depends on what is underneath the snow. If it is pastureland, then you can get away with about 10-15cm. If it is rock then you need a little more than that to preserve your skis. Again, if it is 50cm pisted, it'll last longer than 50cm unpisted.

Knowing the resort that will be pisted pasture land I think.

Megamum, should be fine. The temperature will have more influence on the nature of the surface than will the depth of snow, if it's pasture, and stays cold, no problem. If it starts getting warm during the day, slushy, then freezing at night, it will be icy in the morning, then turning slushy in the afternoon, regardless of how much depth there is.

boredsurfin, Surely in the defintion somewhere of ski 'resort' then lenght of slopes in total of 10-14km doesn't count as a resort Confused

That is more than enough. Last season the there was a lot less snow than that and the skiing was fine, not good I hasten to add.

If it doesnt snow again, it is quite likely to mean a lot of hard packed icy slopes.

yes,but that would apply regardless of the underlying depth. Long periods without snow doesn't necessarily mean icy slopes (hard packed doesn't = icy!). If the temperatures stay cold, and the piste grooming is good, can still be fine.

Megamum,

Your resort has 60cms not 50cms

it has 50cms in the village but the lower runs have 60cms.

10 cms can be a lot wink

Megamum, 50-80cm is bread and butter coverage for this kind of ski area. Coverage should not be a problem. The quality will depend on the weather as pamw says.

skied on 40 in Italy once before, mainly pistes, no problem at all. A few patchy areas on the lower slopes.
Which resort, how many snow cannons do they have, etc.
