Poster: A snowHead

Hi all,
I am looking to buy a pair of Salomon - X-Wing Sandstorm 2007.
I've searched on google and on the forum , yet can't find any good reviews.
I would be most grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Cheers ,
ATT

wouldlovetoski, welcome to snowheads. you say you can;t find any good reviews. CVn you find *bad* reviews? Maybe the ski isn't that good and you should consider something else?

wouldlovetoski, 'Fall Line' magazine had a comprehensive review of all skis earlier in the season. I am at work and do not have a copy to hand. I am sure another Snowhead will quote from it.
Snow & Board also has ski reviews. I am not sure if they covered that model. It may be on the website for SCGB members.

There are reviews on the Fall-Line site here although don't know if that one is in there.
The SCGB review is below - you need access to members part of the website to read them.
Personally I would take all ski reviews with a massive pinch of salt. Beware buying a ski you haven't demoed, I've lost count of the 'highly recommended' skis that I didn't like when I skied them. Best to use reviews just for technical info and awareness of what's available.

The Sandstorm is another very wide ski, with 99mm under the foot. It uses a fibreglass double monocoque wall with an Iscocell complex core, and sits just under the XW Lab, the most extreme of Salomon’s big-mountain range. The ski is not as stiff as some of the more hardcore models in this group. However its wide shape still allows it to float in fresh snow and power through the crud with ease - yet it’s incredibly light and manoeuvrable for a big-mountain ski. Making short turns through the trees it still coped well, and quickly proved itself comfortable coping with a full day of deep-snow conditions, taking into account all the different speeds and turn-shapes. Although relatively easy to use, it still has a fairly straight sidecut - normal for this type of ski - so when trying to ride the edge on harder snow, it still takes a while for the Sandstorm to come around. Overall, a versatile, confidence-inspiring ski that would suit big-mountain skiers of all levels.
Construction
highlights:
* Fibreglass monocoque double wall
* Isocell complex core
* XXL chassis
Suited for: Relatively easy to use for such a specialist ski - can cope in any situation
Weak for: Loses a little stability in chopped up conditions at high speed. Some testers found it a bit lifeless.
Testers'comments: Super-stable in big fast turns off piste, but easy to use for a big mountain ski (Clare Burns) Very playful - easy to use and accessible for many levels of skier (Edouard Rolland) Not as stiff as some skis in this group, giving a smooth feel to high-speed turns (Simon McCombe) |
