Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

La Clusaz 22nd Jan 2008

The trip was a chance to ski a day with le chaton de la glisse - Mr Kittenski himself. He was over on business and had a bit of time to spend in Zinal but first we decided, given the snow forecast, to head up to the tree lined slopes of la Clusaz.

It was raining in the town at 1000m boo boo Mad and the snowline was around 1400 meters with a "bathtub" sweetspot to 1800 m after which snow turned to hail. After pootling around the pistes a bit we finally discovered the stade du slalom which was untracked and undiscovered and we spent quite a bit of the day doing laps here

Snow conditions. Well the slopes, especially south facing, have suffered below 1600m. Some were bare in places although snow covered by the end of the day. Off piste was largely unskiable as it had all been tracked out, then refrozen and the 10-15cm of fresh snow was not enough to cover the cracks.

On piste was "spring" powder on a smooth base. Fairly easy to ski, a bit heavy in some spots. Today weather is cold and sunny.

The avy risk was 2 yesterday but the strong winds and fresh snow have upped the risk to 3 in the HS above 2200 meters. The resort didn't open any of the lifts to the high bowls yesterday - due to wind. Visibility was 25 meters out of the trees.

Resort runs down to 1000meters were open and in good conditions. It is really just south facing slopes that have suffere during the first half of January.
