Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Cheapest resort in California

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello All

Not been on for a while now. Left Blighty to travel the world and now find myself in Texas, hearing about all the lovely snow elsewhere and getting itchy feet.

I will be in California in a couple of months and wondered if anyone can tell me the cheapest resort there - I know everywhere in California is overpriced - as we are trying to conserve as much money as possible to prolong our travels.

Squaw Valley looks good and costs about £138 for ski rental and lift passes for 3 days, but the accomodation is through the roof.

Does anyone know of anywhere better - pricewise?

Thanks again y'all

Durham Red, Try looking to stay around Tahoe City/Kings Beach or even Incline. Could even look at Homewood, probably a B&B or such. you dont have to ski at Squaw if you dont mind small. Theres Apline, Homewood,Sugarbowl,Mt.Rose as well as Northstar all close by Smile

Squaw is always expensive as its on-mountain acc. There are buses I believe but not sure how frequent as we had a 4x4.

Hi Durham Red,

I skiied at Squaw Valley a few years ago and we stayed at Travelodge Motel in Tahoe City which was quite cheap. You need a car though... Good luck.

Go to a casino hotel on the Nevada side of the State line and dont go on a weekend. As long as you miss holiday periods etc and weekends you should be able to pick up a deal as they "loss lead" on the rooms and food to pack in the punters for the gambling. So, as long as you can stay away from the gambling tables you should get decently and cheaply fed and rested.

Dont stay at the resorts themselves such as Squaw, Northstar and Heavenly as they hike up the prices for the proximity to the lifts. Thus you will need to travel but if you stay in say Incline or Kings Beach or Tahoe City you should have 5 or 6 ski areas within a very easy drive (in good road conditions) Alternatively South Lake Tahoe for the south resorts.......it is not a great idea to stay south lakeand ski north lake or vice versa. If necessary split the trip and stay south for a few days and then north for a few days

In good weather it is doable to stay in Reno and ski the north lake resorts......a bit more driving but it is not too bad. In bad weather that is not a good idea.

This link will tell you about some deals

A mid week season pass at Kweed is about $199 - that's all winter. Dirt cheap motels in south Lake around Stateline mid week too.

Totally disagree unless you dont have your own transport. We stayed in Tahoe City and skied Heavenly and Kirkwood ( south of the lake ) easily. Skied Kirkwood twice and each time took 80mins to get there, so not a real problem Smile so long as Emerald Bay is open. Trip was in late Feb.

Squaw does run shuttle buses from Incline which do pick up along the north shore. The public bus service is not bad but limited to once an hour and gets very busy with people going to work.
Buses also run from various casinos in Reno and some of them cost almost nothing to stay at - I stayed at the Sands for $28 a night. Central Reservations at Squaw should be able to help you out.

Emerald Bay was closed on Monday of this week. It is often closed due to avalanche danger rather than the amount of snow on the road, although I would not want to drive the ridge in a storm!

Tahoe City has a few motels that are cheap so that would work for skiing Alpine and Squaw easily.

There are lots of $35-50 a night places in South Lake Tahoe and then you are closer to Kirkwood which is always a good thing ! Love that place.

I reckon its less hassle to be based at South Lake tahoe and then if Emerald Bay is closed it not that bad going round the lake the other way. At least you can get to Kirkwood. If you are based nr Squaw and the bay is closed then its too far to get to Kirkwood and that would pee me off.

Hi again

We've narrowed it down to Heavenly or Squaw Valley for next week. Can anyone tell me how much the daily parking rate and ski locker rental is at these two resorts?

Thanks again

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

no parking fee at Squaw. I think locker rentals are a dollar each time you open them, but I know they are not much.

I can check Heavenly for you by Saturday - I don't think there is a parking charge, but I'll know on Thursday since I'm skiing there then!

The snow is good at the moment at Squaw - corn on the warmer slopes and still wintery chalk on the north facing ones. However, some sort of precipitation is forcast for the next few days so we shall see what happens - hopefully lots of snow! snowHead

I would not go to ay of the Major resorts i.e Lake Tahoe area or Mamouth these are very expensive.

Head to the LA resorts in the San Bernardino Mnts. The areas are small but alot less expensive. At the moment they have arond 2M of snow . I was up there 10days ago.

Yup, Mammoth 'aint cheap if you're on a really tight budget but I wouldn't say it was that expensive in as far as the exchange rate is still pretty favourable. I think if you shop around there should be some cheap places to stay although they might not be that nice!

It's snowing in Tahoe at the moment - skiing was good at Squaw today, not too bad at Heavenly yesterday.

Heavenly has an overnight ski valet for $5, I haven't used ski lockers at Squaw since I don't need to, and I forgot to check today - sorry - although I know Squaw does not have it's own ski valet, but some of the hotels do at the base.

Hope to see you next week at Squaw!
