Prompted by our trip last weekend photos here
1) You can pay in your own currency, get given change in theirs and not lose out on an exchange rate
2) You don't rack up "roaming charges" on your mobile phone
3) The locals don't mind trying to speak your language
4) You don't have to pay motorway tolls to use the fast roads
5) The sleeper train goes direct to your destination, you don't have to change in Paris
6) The hire cars are RHD
7) All the toilets are designed to flush
8 ) If you order a steak, you get it cooked
9) If the weather turns really bad, then there's always Braehead
10) If you can learn to ski Scotland well, then you can ski anything
Sits back and waits for the fish!

fair enough. but i disagree on the steak, oh and you may pay the same currency but you have to spend a lot of it! it wouldnt be hard to make a ten worst things list but the main problem is that they are not allowed to put in a couple of chairs here and there, they cant support any summer activities and so if the snow gets poorer more Scottish resorts will unfortunately have to close. id like to see them support the summer sport more as well but this does require chairs! bit off topic and there may be another place to suggest this but when will they allow some new chairs so that DH biking can run in the summer it would obv be a huge success.

ro55mac, both Glencoe and Nevis have summer biking. Glencoe chair carries bikes and the nevis gondola does too.

I have a way around this, so don't have this problem.

I would only have this problem if i say, wanted to ski in Scotland.

That's a pain in the back bottom as the tolls are on the Left here in France.

I've seen 'Trainspotting' that was set in Scotland.

You just need to know where to go and eat and not stumble around like a lost sheep.

Not a day trip for civilized people, more like 3 days.
The runs will only entertain you for half a day then you get bored.

WW1 death tolls - figures differ by reference- but roughly according to different references:
France & Empire: 1,327,000
Britain & Empire: 908,300

Given the hammering the 'surrender monkeys' received in WW1, I can see why some French were no too keen to keep fighting when in WWII - huge blow though that was for us.

If I lived in Scotland I would be a regular skier. However the price of the ferry is very limiting. Usually £200.00 return. My mate got a deal for £130.00 for this week, which is unusual. Low cost flights are a possibility, but times are crap and there would be too much faffing around.

achilles, the alps are closer to me... 50 mins to the tunnel. 7 hours driving the other side to Chambery. And by plane it is a no-brainer.

If flushing toilets and RHD cars are in the top 10 list of reasons to ski in Scotland, it's not looking too good!

holidayloverxx, I looked into doing what you did to Bourg St Maurice, but to Scotland - but the sleeper gets to Fort William rather far into the morning (especially given that the nearest skiing is still about 4 or 5 miles away (or 24 to Glencoe) and I'm not sure how often buses go to the ski lifts (or even if they do).
The steak one I would put in favour of France, personally.

this is 50% of my recollection of Scottish skiing
the other 50% is colder, windier and more miserable than Siberia
unless you're nursing the wounds in the bar at Dalmunzie, beyond all pain
(and a special mention to the unspeakable cafeteria at the bottom of Glenshee in the seventies - I've had a physcial aversion to tomato soup ever since)
