Hi All,
6 of us heading to Livigno flying into Friedrichshafen on the 26-1. Was wondering what is the easiest way to get to Livigno.

Boy, you have set yourself a challenge, it doesn't look far as the crow flies but there are a hell of a lot of mountains in the way, the usual approach to Livigno is from the South via Bormio.
You are going to have to come in from the North via the Munt La Schera Tunnel.
For a car journey, www.ViaMichelin.com suggests a route via Bregenz, the Arlberg Tunnel, up the Inn Valley into Switzerland, at Zernez, hang left to the Munt La Schera Tunnel. This route avoids high mountain passes that are closed in winter, the Tunnels and Austrian motorways are subject to tolls.

we flew to friedrichsafen where hubby picked me and the kids up in a motorhome and we drove to livvy from there.....its an easy route and alot shorter than the bergamo route and also much nicer scenery....you will need to go through klosters and the vereina which is lovely....we find it a much more relaxing driving route than coming in from milan and usually try to fly to friedrichsafen or zurich and hubby always drives out and meets us en route. the reason we do it this way is because it works out cheaper.....he hates flying, he takes all luggage with him so no extras to pay for on flights, we have no transfer costs and a car for the time we are there.....with cheap diesel all the way and free crossing with tesco vouchers it works out really cheap, economical and convenient for us. you would have to check with the hire car company about taking the car into different countries, bearing in mind you will be in germany going through switzerland and onto italy. i am sure it will be fine but there may be some paperwork needed to take a hire car out of a country

Thanks everyone for your help so far. Thank I might try the train, bus combination. 6 of us so awkward enough for a hire car and the fact that we are leaving Germany might be a problem. If anyone has any further idea's post away.

navandrog, I'd say it will be a long journey by public transport with a lot of changes, it takes 3 hours to get to St Anton from that airport by train and it's just up the road. Maybe an email to the Livigno tourist office might help as a private transfer could be possible. You can probably work out train times from www.bahn.de

hannah34, is it really a shorter run than from Bergamo? We fly to bergamo at the end of feb and are not sure where to stay. Mate wants to do St Moritz but acc is looking expensive.

yes it is it takes approx 2 and a half to 3 and a half hours depending on what time you hit the middle of zurich and if there is no queues for the tunnels and trains. we time our flights to coincide with a decent transfer time i.e earlier in the day or later.....it also seems to go quicker because the scenery is much nicer coming in that way so its not such a boring journey also there is more dual carraigeways and wider roads so is easy to pass slow vehicles.....we have flown to milan bergamo and malpensa to meet hubby before and its always taken us a minimum of 4 hours mainly due to traffic and also getting stuck behind the many tour buses heading to livigno in the narrow roads.

just to clarify the distance from friedrichsafen to livvy is approx the same as bergamo to livvy and zurich to livvy (around 200km).....the difference is in the roads

A quick look at the Swiss Railways website and it looks as if that would involve a minimum of 5 different trains (and up to 8, depending on the routings and timings), then the Post Bus up to Livigno, journey times around 5 hrs and up. Some suggested options even include a ferry across Lake Constance!?! I know it all runs like clockwork, but that many changes with luggage? You definitely need to check when the last bus leaves Zernez on your day of arrival as you don't want to have to stop overnight.

Shouldn't be a problem taking a German hire car into Switzerland, Austria or Italy, but do check when you book. You need to buy vignettes to use motorways in the first two, you might consider winter tyres/snow chains for this trip as well.

Well just had a look at the trains. Arriving in early so should be able to get a train to Zernez easy enough, 4 changes is a pain but hey. Takes about 3 and a half hours. Should then be able to get the bus to Livigno. We have to go to Livignio as we are meeting friend's there. Again any further input would be welcome.

Navandrog, sounds like you've got it sussed, Swiss trains are renowned for their reliability, at least no-one has got to drive in variable winter conditions, I suppose Livigno is a remote place to get to from anywhere, that's why the Italians call it "Little Tibet"
