According to this news from Powder Magazine, 'the world's largest mountaineering school' - the DAV Summit Club, based in Munich - has chosen Tracker DTS avalanche transceivers on an exclusive basis.
The battle of superiority between the competing avalanche beacons is a hot one. In this case the DAV is stated to have "received" the units. It's certainly an interesting development, since the more local brand Ortovox has apparently been rejected, but did the DAV pay for them?
Independent reviews are obviously the best source of information if you're thinking of buying a bleep. As always, www.pistehors.com is a reliable critical source, and provides links to other web reviews.

Couloir Magazine - www.couloirmag.com - had a very informative comparative review of transceivers up on its site a while back, but I can't find a working link to it at the moment. If anyone else has links for info on bleeps, fire away.

I would only add, buy what you are comfortable with, training and practise are the key, and don't trust reviews given by people with a vested interest in selling you something.

Bought the DTS II a couple of weeks back. The guy in the shop said it's easier to use, more robust and the strap is a lot better/easier to use too.

DB, that's about what I'd heard. You can pick up the older version for 50 or 60 chf less so I was wondering about just getting the old one. On reflection, I reckon I'll get the new one.

Reached the same conclusion myself. I could of saved up 100 Euro by getting a safety set with plastic shovel instead of metal, a shorter and lower quality probe and last years model Tracker (or another cheaper model). Hope I don't ever have to use the equipment after an avalanche but if I do the last thing I wan't to worry about is whether saving a few euros would prevent me or someone else looking for me from saving a life.
