I stayed at the Planibel apartments a few years ago. It's fine for a family holiday, and yes the complex is very big. Take lots of layers though, it was one of the coldest holidays I've been on, some of the chairlifts are BITING cold.

If you want something a little more personal, go to Chalet Eden. You can ski in, and the owner even runs you the 400 yards to the lift in the morning in a minibus if you want. Food is very good and a great wine list if you are into this. I looked round the planibel hotel, and although probably adequate, it would not 'add' to the holiday in any way. I would highly recommend Chalet Eden, and the resort is very good.

I also stayed in the Planibel apartments about three years ago. It isn't really a hotel, more of a resort complex with it's own shops, gym, ski hire shop etc. It's a two minute walk down to the main gondola but the paths in the complex can get a bit slippy so you need to take care.
Picadily is right - it can get very cold and windy in La Thuile, especially in January, so do wrap up warm and remember your goggles.
If you book an apartment rather than a hotel room there are some nice places in town to eat out and once you get away from the complex the village is quite quaint.

Stayed in Planibel Hotel last Easter. Hotel not too bad, but a bit big. It has a swimming pool and sauna. Food good. Very good location.

I stayed at the Planibel appartments last January, and had a fantastic holiday. There were 4 of us in an apartment we were told slept 4 - it did, but only just, when you take into account the amount of kit we all had. We lost a days skiing through bad weather when the slopes were closed due to high wind/poor visibility. The following day they opened up a couple of the easier reds (got to by one of the nastiest drags I've ever seen!). As for eating out - try the Bricole (or something similar). Its an old church I think, and although a bit more expensive than elsewhere, the food is great, with a good atmosphere. Also make sure you pay attention to the closing times of the gondola station, as you need to drop your lift pass in on your last day to get your deposits back. Unfortunately our reps from Crystal didn't tell us they had to go there until it was too late. Luckily the ski hire shop on the complex paid us our deposits and took them off our hands - a minor grumble, but when you've chased round at the end of a good week away it leaves a bit of a sour taste!! There are a couple of good restaurants up the mountain - the one by the gondola station is ok, but gets very crowded. There are a couple further up which do relativly good food. Hope that helps!
