The £60 million Xscape snowdome and leisure complex for Braehead, Glasgow - due to open in spring 2006 - is officially launched today. The contents include 120m snow slope, Odeon multiplex cinema, 10-pin bowling, shops, bars, restaurants, an aerial assault course, climbing wall and an extra 50m beginners' ski slope...
This will be the third Xscape project after Milton Keynes and Castleford near Leeds. Its construction commenced two months ago. This report from the Glasgow Evening Times. Here's an extract:

PY Gerbeau, chief executive of Xscape and former frontman of the Millennium Dome, revealed that Odeon Cinemas, Pizza Hut and TGI Fridays have already agreed deals to move into the centre.
He said: "We are creating the ultimate day out and a fantastic entertainment experience for families, individuals and businesses which will attract tourists to Scotland.
"The combination of the existing excellent retail and leisure destination at Braehead is a formula for success.
"Retailers have shown an exceptionally high level of interest." |

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

The MK slope is 176m, I think. That makes the proposed Braehead quite short by current, albeit limited standards. 176m goes by fast enough in 7/8 odd turns, so that sounds very limited. Perhaps they should combine the bowling alley with the bottom of the slope - could be a whole new entertainment.

Mark, I think we need to double-check this. It does sound short to me.

More than 1500 tonnes of real snow will be pumped on to the 120ft ski-slope at Braehead, on the banks of the Clyde, which will be the centrepiece of a giant complex. |
Feet not Metres. Definitely journalistic licence - unless perhaps they are talking of the vertical descent ??? Say 40m vert and around 160m length - pretty steep. Buried deeper in the article is a reference to a 50m mini-ski slope for beginners. 50m > 120 ft so something's definitely ganged a gley.

A couple of impressions of the interior of Braehead Xscape have been posted up on the Snowboard Club UK site. Here they are.

There's another thread on this now which has a link that reveals that there will be a 170m mainslope and 50m beginner slopesee here

It's just possible that the apparent discrepancy in length of slope is explained by the beginners' slope comprising a counterslope at the end of the main slope. This needs clarification.
