So they're all ready to go for Switzerland in February - Not long to wait now and I get to try them on a mountain. They've had something done to them because I can see a fine dusting of wax scrapings on the bindings in some places and the edges on the base have the odd area where I can see a mark or two of wax - there also seems to be more 'depth' to the look of the bases. So I reckon the job's been done. They cost me £6 at Skee Tex.

Megamum, £6 is a good deal, did they tune the edges for you as well?
Just given our skis their final wax before the first trip next weekend. Edges sharp, bases looking good, bring it on!!!

AxsMan, No just waxed the bases - they've only had 2 hours at the snowdome from brand new so I reasoned they probably didn't need it.

Megamum,
good thinking....
you might want to buy a wax stick to run over them when you feel they are slowing you down and the bases dry out...
Just a universal ski wax..not too temperature specific. and then run a nail across the edges and see if you can shave off a tiny tiny slither... just to see that you haven't dulled the edges too much....
that would be a quick check to see the state of your skis.... and don't let any base shots get too big before you get the p-tex out...!!!

How sharp should ski edges feel? I've never really taken much notice, I just get them serviced every ski week. How can I tell if they've done a good job?

My Zardox Notwax Pocket Puck arrived on Thursday Would this be a good thing to run over the edges at night to stop them going rusty or is this nothing to worry about if I am planning on using them the next day

erica2004, stroke the back of your fingernail across (not along) the edge. You should be able to scrape a bit of nail off. (probably best done BEFORE you put on your nail varnish )

Megamum, It would be a good thing to run over the bases each day (I normally do it in the morning). The edges should be fine as long as they are wiped drry before being put away in a dry storage area. (if you do notice specs of rust have appeared don't worry, the snow will wear them off for you anyway )

Megamum, I always do the edges at the same time as the bases after skiing each day. Doesn't use much of the stuff and notwax does have a rust inhibitor.

Zardox Not Wax, this is a supplement to wax and will keep your bases in tip top condition for a week without having to mess about too much in rsort.
On a waxed base, wipe this on then buff off, takes a minute. It does not last 3 days as it says on the packet, but will last day, but more important it will prevent your bases from drying up without having to hot wax in resort. Your bases will still need a hot wax after a weeks holiday.

I've noted the info about the Zardoz not wax on here - thanks everyone, and as mentioned am already the proud owner of a new pocket puck of the stuff all ready to go. Now I know a new pot will last a weeks holiday and probably two even if I run it on everyday, but has anyone found a source to refill the little bottle once empty, or do you just buy a new one. I looked on the web quite hard last night and mostly could see the pocket puck only - somewhere advertised a refill, but it was in the States, which seems a bit of overkill in terms of shipping distance etc. Alternatively does anyone know what is in it - I suspect its only a fluoropolymer in a solvent that I might be able to pick up from a chemical company in a reasonable quantity.

Megamum, Just buy a new one, each lasts about 30 days, I used the same one for 6 weeks skiing and there is still a bit left. Only top up the applicator cloth once it stops leaving a wet shine on the bases. After this time period the cloth will be pretty grotty anyhow so you will need a new one.

I wouldn't worry about the edges overnight in resort, but it's well worth doing this before you pack your skis for travelling. And when you get home, unpack your skis immediately. If you leave them in the ski bag, they will start to rust from trapped condensation in the bag. But Notwax certainly helps to prevent this happening.

Megamum, When it's time to come home , if you can - let the skis dry out before you pack them.

Also - where the edges of the skis are in contact rust will develop in a very short time. So put a piece of card or something similar between your skis when coming hope at the two points where the bases would touch.
