Get out into the Alps and explore! Beautiful in the summer, no crowds, beautiful weather and plenty of things to do: walking, mountain biking, parapente, white water rafting, climbing, swimming etc. Bliss

provenjohn, you can never do too much sailing. If you haven't done the Alps in the summer, you might give it a try - loads to do if you are outdoorsy. Stunningly beautiful (if you go to the right place, nowhere too high and rocky and covered in scree). flowers, cows and bells, etc etc. And sailing too, if you want. Or how about a "learn to parapente" holiday near Lake Annecy? You can, of course, ski on a glacier though the places with glaciers will fall into the "high and rocky and covered with scree" category.

Mrs johnboy, I went with a company called Minster Travel who looked after me very well. They're based in the ski resort of Scheffau in the Tirol which is stunningly beautiful winter or summer.
I rock climb so my break was a little bit specialised, but they do all manner of activities, including lots of great white water stuff like canyoning and rafting. 1p flights to Salzburg with our old friends ryanair...
Decent ski holidays too for that matter...

red 27, sounds good - we've been looking for something to do in the summer - preferably in the alps. I can't rock climb but I can walk and cycle and sail (a bit) and would love to do white water rafting etc. and also enjoy eating and drinking red wine and admiring beautifukl views.
Must check out the flights - don't think Ryanair go from Belfast but they do form Dublin.

provenjohn, we went on a Neilson's activity holiday last year: "Beach Plus" for one week (mix and match from diving, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, yacht sailing, canoeing, tennis, mountain biking - or lounging around) followed by a week flotilla. Very tempted to do the same again (in different locations) this year.

I'd recommend Lech for a summer walking holiday. The locals and hotel staff can't do enough to help you out and make your holiday enjoyable. Lift pass and local buses all free.

provenjohn, We had 2 weeks in Les Gets late July /August last Summer and is was honestly the best holiday we've had since having children (aged 8 and 13 then). Great base in LG and days out in Morzine, Annecy, Geneva and Thonon. Gorgeous scenery, fresh air, blue skies, not too hot, lots to see and do - absolutely loved it and would do it again, in preference to a beach or villa holiday.

Go to the Dolomites and do some via ferratta, they're like slightly adventourous walks that get you, safely, into some amazing positions up some very large cliffs. I have some photos somewhere that I'll try and dig out.

If you can stretch it to two and a half (or better still three weeks), head over to Vancouver. Spend a few days exploring the best city in the world (you could spend a whole week just exploring Stanley Park), then hire a car and drive through the Rockies doing as much as you can cram in: bit of camping, hiking, biking, horse-riding, white water rafting etc ending up in Calgary and fly back from there (my advice would be to drive straight to the airport, because after Vancouver, Calgary would be a bit of an anti-climax... You can do it in two weeks, but you wouldn't get chance to breathe because you'd be cramming so much in.
Or, go the other way if you can only do two weeks: Vancouver then Vancouver Island - many of the same sort of acivities, and you can go Whale watching etc too. Again, longer would be better though. Victoria (the provincial capital) has a beautiful waterfront (as does Nanaimo, a good base for a sea-plane adventure), and a visit to Fairmont's Empress Hotel for afternoon tea is a must.
Or, as a third option from Vancouver, you can do what I did this summer and you can head south across the border to Seattle (I was a little disappointed with this) and then on down to San Francisco. My advice would be to simply fly from Vancouver to SF, unless you are a sea-food fan, in which case a visit to Seattle would probably be well worth it.
As a fourth option from Vancouver, travel north towards Whistler and Pemberton via Squamish and go on a wildlife watching rafting trip (amongst tonnes of other stuff you can do just off the Sea to Sky).

Summer in the mountains - yes! Sunset on Mont Blanc, from my terrace this evening, when I was sat with a glass of Remy Martin:
and haymaking on the piste (note snow cannon) this afternoon, when the mountain was in cloud. Shame we can't do sound effects - the cowbells completed the picture!

Anyone thinking of a summer holiday in the alps should consider this area. 300 days average sunshine per year. Look at the LDA website to see just how many activities there are here. Too many to list, and the skiing of course, and it's usually pretty hot so you can sunbathe by the pool if you like ..... The snow reports thread has photos.

provenjohn, probably too late for you now, but next year...
We went to Uganda and my teenagers loved it. Although the flights can be pricey, costs once there are not so. Loads to do there. The source of the Nile is Lake Victoria at a place called Jinja, there you can go white water rafting (anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days on some excellent rapids), quad-biking (again for any duration), horse trekking, bungee-jumping, or just lie in the sun by the pool and read. Temps were a pleasant 27/28 or so.
They have a number of game parks where you can spot many of the big animals in the wild (lion, elephant, giraffe, hippos, crocs etc)
If you are into gorilla watching Uganda/Rwanda are the best places to go for that (though that is expensive).
You could also get them (and yourselves) involved in a community based project out there. This trip was mainly holiday but we did stay with some friends for 3 days and saw what they were doing at the orphanage and maternitiy unit. My eldest 2 daughters went there 3 years ago and helped out in a school, but there are lots of building or other projects that kids can do out there for any period of time.
Excellent trip for us and cost us approx £1100 per head for the two weeks, including jabs/malaria tablets, flights, internal transportation, accommodation, food, activities etc
Highlights for us would be:
Rafting on the nile
Bungee jumping (Zit 1)
Having elephants trying to drink out of the hotel pool
Playing with the babies at the orphanage (particularly Zit 3)
Relaxing by the pool in the sun for a day or 2 with a book (Mrs Z)

Briancon is a good base for a summer mountain holiday. You can go parapenting, rafting, climbing, mountain biking, cycling, swimming etc
Fly drive from Turin is what we've done 3 times.
