Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I usually browse Snow and Rock catalogue and various magazines for ski recommendations.

I have previously mentioned Volkl 5 stars, but I now notice that, in Snow and Rock catalogue, Volkl 724 Pro seems to come out best of all skis tested.

I looked at points dropped in the 5 categories from stability, versatility, moguls, powder, hard pack.

I will check the US internet sites. Skier or Ski magazine (can't remember which) also give awards for skis.

I know Snow and Rock say they test skis objectively, but am I being cynical in thinking they may tweak the scores of skis they can shift at a good margin ?

Anyone tried this ski ?

Anyone else confused by the various classifications of ski nowadays ?

Freestyle, freeride ( boarding classifications) skiercross, on piste.

It used to be much simpler when you just looked for an all mountain ski

You might want to check EpicSki.com for some objective reviews. Also, see my post here about the upcoming demo day for me...

Latchigo, I'm a cynic too and would only trust the independent tests - retail is a cut throat business and its funny how opinions change when money is concerned. Do S & R have there own ski testers and skis tested under comparable conditions. For accuracy you would have to look for direct comparison tests by the same tester on the same day etc

With apologies to any ski retailers who support this site.........

The best skis are always, free, last year's, or secondhand !

You're right. It's tuff to be feel that the retail outlets are entirely objective. I visited snow & rock a couple of weeks ago (I need to replace my Volkl Vertigo motions,) the 'sales' guy was only interested in talking about Salomon. No matter what I asked, no matter what else I wanted to discuss, he only wanted to talk about Salomon. Can anyone give me an objective view of the following;
Volkl 6 star
Atomic SX B5
K2 Crossfire
Volkl 724 Pro

EpicSki.com is a good site. It has a review of the 724PRO thread at the moment.

Snow & Rock get a gang of people to go a resort, at the end of a season, and test skis, with brand markings blanked out, and then they tot up the marks and rank them - apparently.

The best skis are the ones you waited for and bought in the sales.

Salomon used to be great but I personally don't care for Xscreams or Pilots in their various guises.
