Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to Tignes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Driving to Tignes at the end of Jan and planning to stop overnight at Albertville. We want to get to Tignes by about 7am but not sure how long this part of the journey is likely to take on a Saturday morning?
Is the road up from Lac Chevril? dodgy early morning or is it cleared regulary?
What time does the traffic start to be a become a problem going up to the resort from Bourg St Maurice? We arrived and left late evening by coach last time and didn't really pay attention to road conditions & traffic etc.

Any suggestions?

Setting off early before 5 or 6am at the end of January is probably OK but the chalet owners may have a better view. The big time is during the French mid term breaks at the beginning of Feb. But Saturday is the transfer day and you should set off early to get in and get out of Tarentaise.

The roads are regularly cleared as you can rely on the French would not do anything to cut off the live blood of the region.

The journey from Abertville to Tignes is approximately 3x17 miles. The first 17-mile is dual carriageway to Moutiers (for 3 Valles). The 2nd 17-mile is single carriageway to BSM. The last 17-mile to Tignes is more twisty and may have more snow when you are near Tignes.

If you arrive at Tignes by 7am (or not later than 8am) then you should be able to find a parking space in most areas.

The 50 miles journey should take about 1.5 hours. Should leave Albertville no later than 5:30am for 7am arrival at Tignes.

Smart move to stay overnight in Albertville! Take a set of snow chains if you got them but make sure the tyres have plenty tread and suitable for snow surfaces.

and if you haven't, get some, and make sure you know how to use them. If it's a snowy morning you might not be allowed up the road from BSM without them. The roads are cleared regularly, but if it's snowing hard the snow can build up on the road very quickly. It's because the roads DO need to be kept functioning, on Saturdays of all days, that the police sometimes don't allow cars without chains to proceed. I've had experience of this with only a very little snow on the road. It only takes one car without chains at the crucial moment to gum up the whole road. Chains are a pain, but although you need them only rarely, and they usually stay in the boot, they are absolutely indispensable when push comes to shove.
