Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing by train

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We're thinking of taking our three children skiing for the first time in 2009 - just getting my kicks early by vocarious planning!

Ideally we'd like to travel by train from the UK. Any tips on the easiest resorts to reach by train - bearing in mind too much changing / shifting luggage / getting children to carry things will become painful.

Many thanks

If you find the TOs land you with the demon "underoccupancy" rip-offs, booking accommodation privately might work out cheaper.

I have not had personal experience of taking kids skiing but with summer hols we always found DIY booking to be far cheaper and we always ended up with much nicer, roomier accommodation. Used to really p*** me off that TOs offered special self catering deals with "child rates up to 19 years old" then had the gall to charge underoccupancy if you didn't have enough adults in the group to occupy all the beds. So exactly where were strapping teens expected to sleep??

My advice is to think laterally about this. Yes, by all means get on the direct trains from London to the Tarentaise but you'll be surrounded by boozers and borderline alcoholics with literally tons of luggage around you. Not nice.

This season, I'm leaving on a Sunday afternoon Eurostar to Paris and getting the sleeper to Briancon from gare d'Austerlitz. There wont be any alcoholics, middle class yobs in their twenties effing and blinding or tons of luggage to to navigate around. When I get to Briancon it's only 5 miles to Monetier Les Bains (part of Serre Chevalier) so the hassle factor is minimal. I'll be back in London by Friday morning, avoiding the Saturday crush. It'll be so much nicer for your family as well if you do something similar to this.

I would tend to avoid the likes of Thomson, Crystal etc-they aren't 'specialists' at all, they just book accommodation and transport and charge you the earth for it. Also, when something goes wrong you can be sure of hassle galore and form filling.

kevin mcclean, im thinking of doing the same for 2009. i fancy the brianconnais and monetier with the new baths, how much is that going to cost you? id want to arrive saturday morning in monetier and leave sunday night.

the alternative is the tgv to oulx and then you have sauze d'oulx, sestriere, san sicario, montgenevre and serre che. all within the reach of a bus or a taxi.

Mazza, don't take your kid on the overnight snow train. You will hate it and so, most likely, will they. As Kevin says, take the Eurostar.

The train Christopher is £182 return and the apartment (part of the Ailley) will work out about £150 for my portion. Of course, factor in the usual other costs.

I've done this before and I can recommend it though if you're looking at weekend travelling the train will cost a lot more. Don't even consider flying unless you want to take risks with the likes of Ryanscare and Hasslejet.
