This is the route we have developed over the last 20+ years of driving to the Alps. We have tried variations but haven't bettered this one going to La Plagne. For other resorts check the map for the route on from Chambery or Moutier or Aime.
1. Calais A26 => Reims Speed camera at 38.6 on way home
2. Reims A26 => Troyes Camera Reims under bridge at 136
3. Troyes => Chaumont A5/E54 => Dijon A31
(on way back some signs posted A5 vers Nancy Metz not Dijon! You want A5)
4. A6/E15 Chalon-sur Saone =>A46 Lyon Bypass
(follow Marseille then Grenoble until Chambery is signed)
(on return follow signs Paris A46 onto N346 to A6 )
5. Lyon A43 => Chambery => Albertville
6. N90 Moutiers to Aime
7. At Aime bear right turning signposted La Plagne

Although we don't go to Tarentaise, and our routeto Serre Chevalier takes us to Grenoble from the Lyon bypass, we now diverge from this route just North Of Dijon (A39/A42/A432), which takes you past Bourg-en-Bresse, and Lyon St Exupery airport. This avoids the Lyon bypass, and according to Sat Nav is only 5km longer, but the road is much quieter, particularly if you are going to hit peak traffic. Then to back onto A43.

I also follow the route via Bourg en Bresse to Lyon Airport and then via Chambery etc to Ste Foy. This avoids the very busy Autoroute de Soleil.

I have been using the Bourg en Bresse route too. A fair bit of the Lyon bypass is at 110km/h, so it may not be faster even if it is shorter.

I must admit the one time we went on the Bourg/StExpury 'diversion' it snowed heavily and we haven't been that way since

Am I right in thinking that the toll is cheaper if you use the A39 as opposed to the autoroute du soleil?

Villz, I dont know. Can't imagine it's much different. Certainly not different enough to influence the way you go.

boredsurfin, Like Helen Beaumont, we take the A39 just north of Dijon to Bourg-en-Bresse, then A42 past Lyon Airport to the A432. Its often a real relief to get off the A6 - the A39 being much more peaceful & prettier. But dont mention this to anyone - dont want it becoming too busy

concurr on the bourg en bresse route, as well as much quieter you also can stop in a motorway restaurant and get fantastic organic bresse chicken for next to nothing... yummm....

skimottaret, I totally agree. For those who have not tried it yet, make sure that you make time to stop off at the amusingly named Poulet de Bresse service station near Bourg-en-Bresse on the way down - you'll see a huge metal sclupture of a giant chicken - can't miss it. Heston Blumenthal went there just to try their chickens which are world famous.
Bresse chickens are treated like fine wine. They have an appellation, a particular place where they come from, and they are a particular breed. Plus, they get to eat real food and walk around the countryside, all regulated by law. You have not eaten chicken until you try these - and all at a motorway service station!
(But keep it quiet - it already gets very busy there for those in the know...... )

Arrived in Les Arcs yesterday, drove from north London.
We got tunnel thursday late afternoon, arrived in Calais to darkness and dense fog,
(Ahem to sat nav!)
had hotel booked about 20mins down A26 (Cocove)
Left early friday morning and drive to Ibis Belley (about 30mins from Chambery) took us about 8hours with few pit stops.
Then Belley to Les Arcs just under 2hours, hit no traffic at Moutiers lucky or anywhere really, didnt see any police on route either.
Was doing 70-85mph on motorways and 40/50 towns and mountain areas.
Didn't need snowchains but I'm sure at some points you would.
Could write loads more if anyone wants any info

Tatty, there s another restaraunt a few k's past te one with the big steel chicken sculpture which looks more of truck stop and although i havenet stopeped yet am planning to....
i really like the little appelation tag that they put on the chicken as well to ensure it is a real bresse chicken

OK trip down not too bad. Durham to tunnel negotiated in 5.5 hours including stop at Peterborugh services for breakfast. Delays at the tunnel, but not too bad, and we got away half an hour later than we were supposed to. Arrived in Reims at hotel at about 5.30 (2.20 minutes with only one petrol stop, 85mph on cruise control). Stayed in Hotel Bristol, lovely brasserie, and Xmas market in the street outside. Left about 9am, and arrived in Serre Chevalier at 5.30 pm, longer than usual as there were queues at all the loos, and for food at lunchtime (yes we did get Poulet de Bresse), normally about 7.5hours. Telepeage saved us time though, as there were queues at Lyon and Grenoble, and we got straight through.
