Poster: A snowHead

What are your thoughts for someone new to transceivers. Is it worth the extra money for the ortovox, which I have been told by guides is revolutionary, or should i buy the cheaper Tracker?
cheers

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

BCA have had problems with the Tracker 2 & postponed it's launch & it won't be available this season. IMO the Tracker 1 is easier/faster to use than the S1. There's loads of posts on this subject so I'd suggest doing a search, paying close attention to posts by davidof.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Wacky_Jacky - I've got, and highly rate, the Mamut / Barryvox Pulse. Absolute doddle and very intuitive to use.

slikedges - I bought mine from SMALLZOOKEEPER in Chamonix. I must admit I bought two as part of a load of other stuff and can't remember the price.

Wacky_Jacky, I trialled the S1 and the Pulse in Chamonix at the end of last season. I found the S1 to be too complex and not as intuitive as the Pulse. Both have large user manuals which in the case of the S1 needed to be read and remembered I found the basic functions of the Pulse could be used without having to refer to the manual. Given that it is nearly always a panic situation I would prefer the rest of the group to be equipped with the Pulse over the S1. Just my opinion. Battery consumption on the pulse is heavy in the search mode, beware if you do much practising.

Not sure that I totally agree with that. We should wear beacons with the intent of never having to have it used to find us, by careful choice of terrain and conditions, and so bearing in mind that all beacons are similar in function when it comes to being found, the ease with which they can search for other people should be the main point of choosing one model over another.

I always go by this rule for any equipment.. how easy is it to use with a gale knocking you off your feet, in bad visibility with half frozen fingers and in a state of barely suppressed panic. That may be the senario should you ever have to use it for real.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

achilles, I bought one also - but had a very good deal on a hardly used item from someone who bought it for his buddy on a trip.
