Hi
We are looking to book a late deal to the Alps, we fancy Austria as the snow looks good already.
We normally go January when it's quiet, but our Son is in his last year of school so we going at xmas to try to do the 'good parent' thing !
I have found a couple of good deals in Kitzbuhel - has anyone skiied there at christmas - I was wandering how busy the slopes would be for xmas
Also found a couple of good deals for xmas in Saalbach, and Italy-Passo Tonale - any comments on these would also be appreciated
thanks

LisaM,
I would go to Saalbach. I can never find any good deals to there. Skied there a few years ago for 1 day. Fantastic resort. Can't comment on Kitzbuhel, but have been to Passo Tonale twice. It has good snow, is good value. It is now lift linked to Ponte di Legno which has some very nice tree runs.
Saalbach is better in my opinion. Good Luck

Kitzbuhel is a lovely traditional Austrian town, that you will love. however, less about you and more about your son having to go back and do his exams. Good skiing, great apres ski, lots of young people. I love saalbach/hinterglemm. I assume he snow is decent at the moment.
We are in the same position, our son is in his final year and so we tried to get in at Saalbach over new year without success so we are off o the Skiamade

I have done 3 Christmasses (or more probably solstice-passing celebrations) at Kitzbuhel and two at Saalbach. There is good sking for an intermediate (aren't we all) in both places, but for magic I would choose Kitz every time.
It is a beautiful place, and we were drawn to go back there from Sallbach just for the atmosphere last year (about an hour on the train). There is enough skiing to keep you interested and although both resorts get busy on boxing day, the lifts are good enough to keep you moving without the queues being too bad. It tends to be in bad snow years that the resorts get busy, so with luck it will be good this year.
For me, the highlight is around 8 o'clock on the 24th - which is the family party and presents day in Austria- in Kitz the two adjacent cathedrals get their bells going. It takes around 20 minutes of silent swinging before they begin to boom, and then it is really something. The whole town turns out and people visit thier family graves and light candles and place little Xmas trees on the graves. In -15 that is eerie and quite moving, even to a non-believer. The Christmas market which is most of kitz town square is also not to be missed. Hot wine and music in the streets.
If the quality of the skiing is more importnt to you, then Saalbach is better, but Kitz is an experience not to be missed. I love the place. I even feel a bit guilty we are going to Switzerland this year!

LisaM,
If you want to explore the massive ski regions within Ski Amade we still have availability in our catered chalet. We are doing deals for so may be able to compete with the deals you have already found.
We are based in Radstadt, which is a small pretty town. The advent market has just been put up and the gluhwein is already flowing! We are also just 45min from Salzburg which is well worth visiting in the afternoon after an early ski!...
There is loads of skiing currently open with more and more being opened every day... yeaterday we went to Wagrain which is a lovelly town about 10min away and were the only ones there with fresh powder!
At xmas the well known resorts like Flachau and Schladming and Zauchensee get quite busy. Normally there is a cue for the first gondala but we know lots of georgous little places like Fageralm that offer great little huts and quiet slopes!
Have a look at some of the independents like ourselves as we are often situated in some little-known-by-the-brits places - good luck !!
